(Photo by Jack Kelly) In recognition of National Emergency Medical Services Week, the Newport Fire Department recently hosted a demonstration of EMT capabilities and firefighting equipment and apparatus. The event, held at Headquarters, Station #1, Marlborough St., was open to the general public and attracted a number of families. Firefighter and paramedic, Mike Turskey, demonstrated the many medical devices and lifesaving equipment contained on Rescue #1, which the department uses to serve and assist the citizens of Newport. Firefighters and EMTs, Mike Page and Dan Oakley, led local residents through tours of the station and firefighting apparatus, while explaining the various tools and equipment firefighters employ in the performance of their duties. Firefighter and EMT Ed Coleman manned the department’s grill and served hot dogs and hamburgers to the folks that attended the event. Young John Olivera summed up the day’s proceedings best when he said, “They do a lot to help us and take care of us. Firemen are good guys!” – JK
