Hundreds ditched their cars in favor of two wheels this past weekend to celebrate and attend two local events: Newport Bike to Work Day and the Volvo Ocean Race. Friday morning saw Bike Newport's fifth annual Bike Commuter Breakfast in Washington Square, where the organization asked 115 bicycle commuters to share why they bike as they enjoyed breakfast provided by A Market, Washington Square Cafe, and Stop & Shop.

Over the weekend, the final two days of the Volvo Ocean Race stopover drew tens of thousands of spectators, including more than 400 bicyclists on both Saturday and Sunday. Volunteers counted 2,028 bicyclists over the course of the two-week stopover, or about two percent of total attendees.

The city will add 160 "sharrow" road sharing symbols to the Ocean Drive loop, reminding all that bikes are ever present and welcome on the roadway.
