They’re Baaaaaaack!

Newport may not always be a bed of roses, but it comes pretty close every spring when hundreds of thousands of daffodils planted through the "Daffodillion" campaign burst forth, offering the promise of warm summer days to come and a rebirth of activity throughout the city. Thanks to Daffodillion, a local beautification effort, more than 300,000 bulbs have now been planted throughout the city. The Alliance for Livable Newport led the effort of countless volunteers and civic and other organizations to distribute and plant bulbs in public areas citywide. Although a little behind schedule this year after a particularly grueling winter, the fields of sunshine have kicked into high gear with the recent uptick in temperatures and should be in full splendor for the Daffodil Days Festival April 17-19. Events kick off at Bowen’s and Bannister’s wharves Friday at 5 p.m. and continue across town with a classic car parade, bike ride, garden viewings and even a ballet. For a complete schedule of events, see page 12.
