RECENT DEATHS

Heidi A. Allen, 48, of Middletown, passed away March 31, 2015 at Rhode Island Hospital, after a brave and extended struggle with cervical cancer. Donations in her name may be made to charities supporting cervical cancer research.

Jil Teves Carreira, 98, of Newport, passed away April 5, 2015 at the Heatherwood Nursing and Subacute Center. He was the husband of the late Alice (Pacheco) Carreira. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in World War II. He leaves behind his son William Carreira (Gail) of Portsmouth, two grandchildren and three greatgrandsons. Calling hours will be Saturday, April 11, from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. at Connors Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held immediately following at 1 p.m.

Barbara Anne Chavous, 80, of Newport, passed away March 28, 2015 at Rhode Island Hospital. She leaves behind her seven children: Donna Pine and Russell Chavous of Newport; Richard Chavous (Erin) and Joann Pasquale (Frank) of Middletown; Robert Chavous (Kim) of Portsmouth; Sheryl Chavous of North Kingstown; Barbara Stanford (Tom) of Florida; eight grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

Mary L. Dietz, 58, of Portsmouth, passed away Monday, April 6, 2015 at St. Anne's Hospital in Fall River, Mass. after a battle with lung cancer. She was the wife of Charles Dietz. She leaves behind four children and four grandchildren. Calling hours will be Friday, April 10, from 10 - 11 a.m. at Connors Funeral Home, followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. Donations in her memory may be made to the Lung Cancer Research Foundation, 155 East 55th St., Suite 6H, New York, NY 10022.

Frank King Faulkner, 88, of Newport, passed away March 30, 2015 at Newport Hospital. He was the husband of Ethel Faulkner. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, called to duty twice in World War II. He leaves behind his children, Brian Faulkner of Conn. and Susan Nugent of Mass., and five grandchildren.

Ellen Mabel (Greatorex) Gross, 72, of Portsmouth, passed away April 1, 2015 at Newport Hospital. She was the wife of Walter R. Gross. She leaves behind two children and one granddaughter. Donations in her name may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

Bette Mae Holmboe, 77, of Portsmouth, passed away March 24, 2015. She was the wife of Dr. Kenneth Holmboe. She leaves behind her children, Eric, Kristi and Kevin. She was a member of the Newport Garden Club and the English Speaking Union. Memorial services will be held Saturday, April 11 at 11 a.m. at Saint Columba’s Chapel, 55 Vaucluse Ave., Middletown. Donations in her memory may be made to the Foundation for Fighting Blindness, 7168 Columbia Gateway Dr., Suite 100, Columbia, MD 21046.

Mary J. Hopkins, 91, of Newport, passed away April 4, 2015 at home. She leaves behind her daughters, Margie Dunbar (Norman) of Middletown and Joan Hopkins of Newport, two granddaughters and two great-grandchildren. All services will be private. Raymond Leroy MacFarlane, 78, of Newport, passed away March 30, 2015 at home. He was the husband of Patricia (Knoob) MacFarlane. He was a U.S. Navy veteran during the Korean and Vietnam wars, retiring in 1976 as chief petty officer. He spent most of his career in the submarine services. Burial with military honors will be in the Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Exeter. Donations in his memory may be made to the Autism Society of Northwest Ohio, 6629 West Central Ave., Suite 1, Toledo, OH 43617.

Rose Wynperle, 99, of Portsmouth and Middletown, passed away April 6, 2015 at Newport Hospital. She was the wife of the late Charles J. Wynperle and the late Anthony Lewis. She leaves behind her children, Barbara Lewis of Portsmouth and Frank Lewis of Middletown, several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Calling hours will be Friday, April 10, from 4 -7 p.m. at Memorial Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, April 11 at 9 a.m. at Jesus Saviour Church.
