Sheffield to Incubate Innovation

Long an eyesore on the Newport cityscape, the Sheffield Elementary School, closed and deteriorating for almost a decade, will soon begin a massive transformation into an incubator space for early stage technology entrepreneurs, the first private-public partnership of its type in Rhode Island. The formal announcement came on April 8 at a ceremony attended by U.S., state, and local officials. U.S. Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Economic Development Jay Williams stressed the importance of the program in spawning a vibrant tech industry and cited the potential rewards for the area. The Newport TechWorks Innovation Center, as envisioned by city planners, will become home to defense, marine, environmental and digital startup companies. Pictured: R.I.
