Olga Enger

Twelve people were displaced after a three alarm fire broke out Friday morning at Catherine Street apartment.

The Newport Fire Department, along with Middletown and Portsmouth, fought the fire for two and a half hours, finally bringing it under control at around 1:30 p.m.

The American Red Cross is finding temporary shelter for at least 12 people who have been displaced. The fire was believed to be caused by plumber welding on the first floor, according to a preliminary report.
