RECENT DEATHS

Alfred A. Almeida Sr., 74, of Portsmouth, passed away March 30, 2015 at Newport Hospital. He was the husband of Cecilia (Nascimento) Almeida. He also leaves behind his children, Alfred Almeida, Jr. (Paula) of North Carolina, Chuck Almeida of Middletown, Melissa Simpson (John) of Tiverton, and Jennifer Almeida of Newport; and nine grandchildren. Calling hours will be Friday, April 3, from 5 – 8 p.m. at Connors Funeral Home, Portsmouth. Burial will be private. Wallace H. Baines, 97, of Portsmouth, passed away March 22, 2015 after a brief illness. He was the husband of the late Claire Jane Baines. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and was awarded the Bronze Star in World War II. He also served in the Korean and Vietnam wars. He retired after nearly 30 years as a Master Chief Hospital Corpsman. He leaves behind his four children, Linda Martin and Steven Baines of Middletown, and Claire Clark and Wallace Baines of Florida, six grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. Roselind T. (Benevides) Ferris, 91, of Newport, passed away March 26, 2015. She was the wife of the late Manuel F. Ferris Sr.. She worked as an aide during World War II at the Fort Adams military hospital. She leaves behind her son Manuel Francis Ferris Jr. (Gena) of Middletown, two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Duane L. Frank, 79, passed away March 21, 2015 at Saint Anne’s Hospital, Fall River, Mass. He was the husband of Flora (Silvia) Frank. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and also worked for 46 years for the Portsmouth School Department, retiring as head custodian. He leaves behind his daughter Kathryn Vieira (Michael) and two grandsons, of Portsmouth. Cosimo “Gus” Granitto, 90, of Middletown, passed away March 25, 2015. He was the husband of Laura (Farello) Granitto. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He leaves behind his children, Gary Granitto of Pittsburgh and Laurie Holbrook (Hank) of Newport, and two grandchildren. He was buried with military honors in Rhode Island Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery in Exeter. Donations in his memory may be made to the Disabled Veteran’s of America, P.O. Vasiliki “Bess” Yeanopoulos Jex, 95, of Middletown, passed away March 26, 2015 at the Village House. She was the wife of the late Donald Robert Jex. Donations in her memory may be made to St. Spyridon Church, P.O. Box 427, Newport, RI 02840.

Ann C. Reynolds, 97, of Middletown, passed away March 26, 2015 at Forest Farm Center, Middletown. She was the wife of the late Joseph Edmund Reynolds. She leaves behind five children, 11 grandchildren, 30 greatgrandchildren and 13 great-great grandchildren. Her funeral will be held on Friday, April 10, at 9 a.m. at St. Lucy's Church, Middletown. Joanna M. Smith, 78, of Middletown, passed away March 30, 2015. She was the wife of Daniel Smith. She also leaves behind her children, Justin Smith of Newport, and Jennifer Hanley of Easton, Mass. and Newport, and two grandchildren. Claire M. Sullivan, 86, of North Dartmouth, Mass., formerly of Newport, passed away March 24, 2015. She was the wife of the late Robert Sullivan of Newport, and her former husband, the late Herbert H. Weida. She leaves behind five children, nine grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. Donations in her memory may be made in her memory to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
