Celebrate Annual Daffodil Festival

Newport is getting ready to celebrate its second annual Daffodil Days Festival April 17-19. The bright yellow flowers, planted in fall, are starting to come to life. Thanks to “Daffodillion,” a local beautification effort, 385,000 bulbs have now been planted throughout the city.

“Our goal is to plant one million bulbs in Newport, becoming the daffiest city in New England,” said John Hirschboeck, the project director. “Daffodils are a sure sign of spring. Our Daffodil Days Festival is a celebration of their annual renewal and beauty.”

This year’s Daffodil Days will feature a variety of family events all around town, all free of charge.

Join in the “Tour de Jonquilles” Bike Ride on Saturday, April 18. The Daffy bike riders (bikes decorated with daffodils encouraged) will depart from Touro Park for an easy three-mile ride to view beds of daffodils throughout Newport and conclude at Ballard Park.

On Sunday, April 19, there will be a car rally with daffodil-decorated classic cars parading through Newport, departing from the Visitor’s Center, on to Ocean Drive, and ending at Bellevue House.

Later that afternoon, the Rhode Island Ballet Theatre will perform “Dance of the Daffodils” at Ballard Park in an encore performance.

Other highlights include a dog parade with pets dressed in “daffy” attire and a window decorating contest.
