Keep Your Eye on the Ball

Although temperatures have barely nudged into the 40s, island youngsters are already dreaming of hot summer days, the crack of bats, and the joys of running bases with friends and family cheering them on. Newport Little League held tryouts at Thompson Middle School last week and young players, age 7-12, who had not donned a glove in the league before were put through their paces to determine their level of play. Potential “Big Papis” were assessed on their running, fielding and hitting prowess and will be drafted by t-ball and minor league coaches. A lucky few will be invited to try out for the majors.
