The Best Shades of Green

Kids and families from all over town converge on “The Hut” for a cornucopia of alcohol-free activities on St. Patrick’s Parade Day, once the famous procession winds down. Entertainment abounds all afternoon with bagpipers, fife and drum performers, Irish step dancers, Tony the Dancing Cop, and even pirates gathering for nonstop fun. Everything is free, with a $100 door prize, face painting, refreshments and much more, including giveaways, on tap. A highlight of the event is always the “How Green Am I?” contest, where youngsters get as creatively green as they can and vie for cash prizes. Pictured are three contestants from the 2014 competition. The festivities run 1-4 p.m. on March 14 at The Hut, 35 Golden Hill St., behind the Newport Public Library.
