Beetle Campaign

To the Editor:

Did you know that Rhode Island is one of four states that doesn't have a state insect? The thirdgrade class at St. Michael's Country Day School in Newport is trying to make the American Burying Beetle the state insect of Rhode Island. We would like to share some information about the American Burying Beetle with you so you can help spread the news in the community.

The American Burying Beetle is mainly found on Block Island. It is also the largest carrion beetle in North America. They are known as nature's most efficient recyclers. The American Burying Beetle's scientific name is Nicrophorus americanus. Some people are trying to save this beetle from extinction.
