Brain Injury Support Group

The support group is an opportunity for individuals with brain injury, family and friends to come together to provide mutual support and assistance in coping with the consequences of brain injury.

The group meets the second Tuesday of the month at the Newport Hospital from 6:30 - 7:45 p.m. The next meeting is March 10. For more information, contact the Brain Injury Association of Rhode Island, 401-228-3319.

Community Walking Program

Those who would like to participate in an indoor walking program are invited to meet at the Newport Hospital in the atrium on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Trained leaders will be on hand. Participants must be able to tolerate 10 minutes of standing. The program is free of charge.

High School Game to Help Special Olympics

An East Bay unified basketball team event will be held at Portsmouth High School on Wednesday, March 11 at 3:30 p.m. Each team will face one opponent. A pizza dinner, half time activities and a sportsmanship presentation will round out the event. All the money raised will benefit the Special Olympics. Small Business Forum

Rep. Lauren H. Carson (D-Dist. 75, Newport) will host a constituent forum on Monday, March 16. The session, which is open to all, will focus on small business issues. It will be held at the Newport Public Library, beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Carson, who is a member of the House Committee on Small Business, encourages business owners to attend and offer their ideas on issues related to running their companies in Rhode Island.

“As a member of the Small Business Committee, I’m particularly interested in exchanging ideas with small business owners in Newport so I can better address their needs at the state level,”said Carson.“The General Assembly has been working diligently to make Rhode Island a better place to run a business, and I am eager to hear the comments of business people about how they view recent efforts and also their suggestions about what we can together do to make things even better.”

BridgeFest Art Contest

The Arts & Cultural Alliance of Newport County invites regional artists to submit one original piece to be considered as BridgeFest Official Festival Art. Artists should send photos of an original piece that represents Newport and/or the Newport arts and music community to music@newportbridgefest.com. The deadline is April 1.

NRF Awards Grants

The Newport Restoration Foundation recently announced the recipients of the 2014 Doris Duke Fund for Historic Preservation grants. The grants are given for bricks-and-mortar projects or project planning. This year’s recipients and projects: St. Columba’s Chapel, Middletown, for stone work repair; Whitehall, Middletown, for repair and painting; Portsmouth Historical Society, school house repair; International Tennis Hall of Fame, porch railing restoration; Belmont Chapel Foundation, roof stabilization; Newport Art Museum, restoration of the north face; United Baptist Church, renovation of the parsonage porch; Emmanuel Church, preservation of existing chimneys; St. John’s Parish House, window repair and restoration; and the Women’s Resource Center, for wood floor refinishing.

The 2015 Doris Duke Historic Preservation Awards will be celebrated on Sept. 11 at Rough Point. The program is a joint project of the Newport Restoration Foundation and the City of Newport to celebrate achievements in local historic preservation.

3 on 3 Basketball Tournament

The Newport County YMCA is hosting the second annual Neal La- Chance Memorial 3 on 3 basketball tournament on Sunday, March 22. The proceeds from this tournament will go toward sports scholarships to benefit youth in Newport County. There will be three divisions for this double elimination tournament: 6-8 grade, 9-12 grade and an open division (18 and older).

Pre-registration must be done at the office. The fee is $10 per person with a limit of four players per team. For more information, contact the YMCA at 401-847-9200 x 113.

Save The Bay Swim Registration

Registration for the July 11 Save The Bay swim opened March 2. Nearly 500 swimmers and 200 kayakers made the 1.7 nautical-mile journey last year from Naval Station Newport across the East Passage to Jamestown’s Potter Cove to raise money for Save The Bay. Swimmers must be 15 years old. To sign up, visit savebay.org.

Rogers Boosters Club Annual Fundraiser

The Rogers Boosters Club annual fundraiser to support Rogers High School athletics will be held on Saturday, March 7 from 6 - 9 p.m. Hors d’oeuvres and cocktails will be served at the Leys/Corcoran home, 57 Ruggles Ave. Donations of any amount will be accepted at the door. Mosaic Club Theater Day

The Newport Playhouse and Cabaret Restaurant is hosting a special performance fundraiser for the nonprofit Mosaic Club on Saturday, March 21. Doors open at 11 a.m., with a buffet at 11:30 a.m. The play, “When the Cat’s Away” begins at 1 p.m. and will be followed by cabaret. Tickets are $50 and are available from club members. Blue Cross Medicare Seminar

Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island is hosting a free informational seminar at the Courtyard Marriott, Middletown on Tuesday, March 17 at 1 p.m. for individuals newly eligible for Medicare and/or retiring. This seminar is ideal for individuals who want to learn more about the general Medicare process and learn about the range of options available from Blue Cross.

Chamber Expo

The Newport County Chamber of Commerce’s 20th Annual Consumer Expo will be held on Tuesday, March 10 at the Hyatt Regency Newport, Goat Island from 4 – 7 p.m. Admission is free for Chamber members and their employees.
