The 2015 Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society active duty fund drive is under way and will run through March 31. The 111-year-old charity provides financial, educational and other support to active duty and retired sailors and Marines in times of need. Last year, the NMCRS distributed more than $48 million in financial assistance, handling more than 64,000 cases worldwide, and the Newport office assisted 145 clients with almost $111,000 in interest free loans and grants.

Mission Nutrition

MWR will offer a two-day course on the principles of proper nutrition on Wednesday, March 11, and Thursday, March 12, from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Chafee Fitness Center. Space is limited. Call 401-841-3154.

Volleyball

Registration begins March 9 at the Chafee Fitness Center for the upcoming intramural volleyball season. Military personnel, dependents and DoD employees are eligible to participate. There will be a coaches meeting on March 11 at 4:30 p.m. and a skills clinic on March 18, 4:30-6:30 p.m. The season runs March 23-May 7, with games played at the Fitness Center Monday through Thursday evenings at 5:30 and 6:30 p.m.

Spouse Trivia Night

Military Spouses of Newport is celebrating St. Patrick’s Day with a Trivia Night event at Buskers in the upstairs lounge on Wednesday, March 11, at 7 p.m. Dress up in your favorite St. Patrick's Day garb and join in the trivia fun. Tables will be set up for teams to eat and play together. Prizes will be awarded for best dressed and winning teams. The cost is $15 for members and $20 for non-members. Gown and Dress Swap

The Rhode Island National Guard Family Assistance Center is hosting the third annual Gown and Prom Dress Swap on Saturday, March 14, 1-5 p.m. at the Warwick Armory, 541 Airport Road, Warwick. A full line of dresses and accessories suitable for a prom, military ball or wedding has been donated by military families and members of the community. The afternoon of “wallet-free shopping” will also include beauty demonstrations, a fashion show, and entertainment. Chapel of Hope

The Chapel of Hope holds Sunday worship each week: 7:45 a.m., liturgical Protestant; 9 a.m., Roman Catholic Mass; and 10:30 a.m., contemporary Protestant. Muslim prayer is offered every Friday from 12-3 p.m.

Jewish Torah study is offered on the first Wednesday of the month at 6:30 p.m. Women’s Bible study meets at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and 9:30 a.m. on Wednesdays, and men’s Bible study is at 6:30 a.m. on Thursdays. For more information, call 401-841-2234.

Comedy at O’Club

The Winter Comedy Series continues Wednesday, March 11, Topside at the Officers’ Club at 7 p.m. with Kerri Louise and Ray Harrington. The show is free and open to all hands with base access, but the series is geared towards adults and is not family friendly. For more information, call 401-841-1442.

Military Tax Assistance

Free tax assistance is available to military personnel. Trained Tax Aide volunteers will prepare personal federal and state tax returns free of charge for military members, retirees, staff employees and their families at the command headquarters building, 690 Peary St. This service is offered each Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. For an appointment, contact Jeff Carney at 401-294-6775 or email jmcarney70@verizon.net.
