MLK Tribute at Temple Shalom

The annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Sabbath Eve Service of Temple Shalom will take place on Friday, Jan. 23. The service will commence at 7:30 p.m. Rabbi Marc S. Jagolinzer and Cantor Fredric Scheff will officiate, and the Community Baptist Church Choir will participate in a tribute to Dr. King under the direction of Rev. Laurie Smalls. Rabbi Jagolinzer will preach on “The Importance of Words.”Temple Shalom is located at 223 Valley Road in Middletown.

Coat Room

The Seamen’s Church Institute will host its winter clothing and coat room. The room will be open Mondays through Friday from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m., or by appointment if needed. Winter items will be available throughout the winter as available. For more information, call Mary at 401-847-4260.

UCC Potluck

United Congregational Church will hold a public potluck dinner on Saturday, Jan. 24, at 5:30 p.m. in Farnum Hall, 524 Valley Rd., Middletown. Rick Williams, Capt., USCG (Ret.), will deliver a presentation on the progress of construction and missions of Rhode Island’s Tall Ship, SVV Oliver Hazard Perry. Williams is construction supervisor for the project.

St. Mary’s Thrift Shop

With the completion of a new external drop box, St. Mary’s Thrift Shop, 324 East Main Road, Portsmouth, can now accept donations outside of store hours. Note, winter clothing is still in high demand. Bring new or gently used items to the small door adjacent to the shop’s front entrance.

The store cannot accept books, breakables, or TVs and other outdated electronics. If an item is too bulky to fit, deliver it during store hours (Wednesday and Saturday, 10 a.m.-1 p.m.). For more information, call 401-846-9700.

K of C Free Throw

The Knights of Columbus free throw basketball championship will be held Saturday, Jan. 24, at 10 a.m. in the Bradley School gym, behind St. Anthony’s Church, 2836 East Main Road, Portsmouth. All boys and girls ages 9 to 14 are eligible. Grand prizes will be awarded to one boy and one girl who make the most free throws.

For the boys, the grand prize is a basketball signed by Providence College Friars men’s team, and the girls’ grand prize is a basketball signed by Providence College Friars women’s team. Age eligibility is determined by the contestant’s age as of Jan. 1. Participants are required to furnish proof of age for the competition and written parental consent. Temple Family Series

Temple Shalom’s Family Education program will present “Italy and the Lingering Jewish Influence” on Sunday, Jan. 25, at 10 a.m. Scott Weininger will lead the discussion. For more information, call 401-846- 9002. Temple Shalom is at 223 Valley Road, Middletown.

Yoga at Emmanuel

Yoga class is held at Emmanuel Church every Wednesday morning at 9:15 a.m. in the St. Andrews Room with certified yoga instructor Shelley Dungan. All ages and abilities are welcome. Touro Synagogue Tours

Touro Synagogue is open for tours on Sundays, through the Loeb Visitors Center. The center is open 11:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. and synagogue tours depart at 12, 12:30, 1 and 1:30 p.m.

Warm Up Wednesdays

Neighbors are welcome to come in from the cold at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 12 Marlborough St., during Warm Up Wednesdays. Drop in anytime 1-4 p.m. and enjoy fellowship, games, and refreshments.

Spaghetti Dinner

There will be a spaghetti dinner in the St. Barnabas church hall Saturday, Jan. 31, immediately following the 5 p.m. Mass. Tickets are $8 for adults and $4 for children 6-12. Ages 5 and under are free. The dinner includes spaghetti, meatballs, sausages, salad, bread, and a beverage. Dinner music will be provided by Linda Alber. Tickets are on sale at all weekend Masses and in the parish office.

Military Spouse Support Group

Calvary United Methodist Church offers a support group for military spouses each Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. Spouse residents and those new to the area are welcome to meet at the church, 200 Turner Road, Middletown. Child care will be provided. For more information, call 401-847-6181.

UCC Happy Bookers

The next meeting of the United Congregational Church book group will be on Monday, Jan. 26, at 7 p.m. in the Manchester Room. The group will discuss “The Invention of Wings” by Sue Monk Kidd. Sign up at the church or call the office at 401-849-5444.

St. Mary’s Annual Meeting

St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, 324 East Main Road in Portsmouth, will hold its annual meeting on Sunday, Feb 1. Enjoy a light lunch of soup and bread after the 10:30 a.m. service, followed by the annual parish meeting at noon. Members are asked to contribute a small salad or dessert to accompany the meal.
