Mastery through Movement

Hundreds of Pell Elementary students have been learning in leaps and bounds this week, literally as well as figuratively, as members of the Island Moving Co. have been on hand teaching curriculum-based creative movement to second and third graders. Third grade students have been incorporating the school themes of perseverance, safety, compassion and respect in their dance, while second graders are piloting a program involving math concepts and movement. All aspects of the project support curriculum elements. The third graders will perform for the entire student body and their parents on Jan. 16. Now in its sixth year in Newport elementary schools, the Island Moving Co. residency is supported by the Benefactors of the Arts’ Secret Garden Tour.
