Soup and Sandwich Fundraiser

Community Baptist Church will hold a Soup and Sandwich fundraising event on Friday, Jan. 16, from 5-7 p.m. The benefit will be held in the annex, 40 Dr. Marcus F. Wheatland Boulevard. The cost is $7 for a soup and sandwich combo.

Men’s Breakfast and Bible Study

The Men’s Group at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Portsmouth will offer a light breakfast and fellowship on Saturday, Jan. 17, at 8:30 a.m. in the adult education room. Newcomers are welcome. This is a very informal group, and you can jump in anytime. Meetings are typically held on the second and fourth Saturdays. Contact Paul Westrom at pwestrom@neit.edu for more information.

PFLAG to Meet

Channing Church will host its first meeting of Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) Providence to discuss the grassroots support network on Sunday, Jan. 18. The nationwide group was founded 23 years ago by the mother of a gay son in the hope of advancing equality and acceptance of LGBT people and issues through support, education and advocacy. The public is invited to attend the informational meeting at 2 p.m. in the church parish hall, 135 Pelham St., and the Q&A session following, sponsored by Channing’s Interweave Program. Trinity Forum

On Sunday, Jan. 18, the adult forum at Trinity Church will welcome Marilyn Warren, executive director of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center, to provide an update on MLK activities and discuss areas open for volunteer involvement. Community Blood Drive

There will be a community blood drive at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 7 Valley Road in Middletown, on Thursday, Jan. 22, from 3-7 p.m. A free steak dinner and a coupon for one pound of Dunkin Donuts coffee will be given to all donors.

Emmanuel Book Club

The Emmanuel Church Book Club will meet on Tuesday, Jan. 20, to discuss “To Kill A Mockingbird” by Harper Lee at 6 p.m. All are welcome to attend (whether you’ve read the book or not). Gather in the Guild Room at Emmanuel, 42 Dearborn St. For more information, call 401-847-0675.

Candlelit Compline in Epiphany

Trinity Church will hold Evening Compline on Sunday, Jan. 18, at 7 p.m. Compline stems from the earliest prayer traditions of the ancient church. Traditionally, it is the last of the daily monastic services, sung as a final prayer before going to sleep. The candlelit liturgy, sung by the Trinity Choir, will offer an opportunity for deep spiritual contemplation and meditation.

Chanting Workshop

The Newport Community Chanting Group meets every Saturday at 9 a.m. in the All Saints Chapel at Emmanuel Church. On Jan. 17, the group will offer “Chanting is Half the Battle,” a workshop by Jiavanna Skolnik from Ananda Meditation and Yoga Center in Hopkinton. The workshop will include devotional chanting based on “Whispers from Eternity - A Book of Answered Prayers” by Paramhansa Yogananda. Donations for the workshop will be accepted to support the church’s community meal program, and pre-registration is not required. For more information, call the church office at 401- 847-0675.

St. Barnabas Bible Study

A planning meeting for an evening Bible study group will be held at St. Barnabas on Wednesday, Jan. 21, at 6 p.m. in the parish center. All are welcome to attend. For more information, call 401-683-1343.

Toothbrush and Chapstick Drive

Calvary United Methodist Church is collecting dental health products for distribution at community meals. New, individually wrapped toothbrushes, dental floss, lip balm, and travel-size toothpaste and mouthwash are sought. Small containers of hand lotion are also needed. Items may be left in the box outside the church office at 200 Turner Rd., Middletown. Adult and child size toothbrushes are needed and soft bristles are preferred. Emmanuel Annual Meeting

MLK Tribute

The annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Sabbath Eve Service of Temple Shalom will take place on Friday, Jan. 23. The evening will begin with a dinner at 6:30 p.m. to which all worship attendees are invited. The service will commence at 7:30 p.m. Rabbi Marc S. Jagolinzer and Cantor Fredric Scheff will officiate, and the Community Baptist Church Choir will participate in a tribute to Dr. King under the direction of Rev. Laurie Smalls. Rabbi Jagolinzer will preach on “The Importance of Words.” Dinner will be provided by the members of Temple Shalom. MLK Drawings to be Presented

Local artist Estella Miller will present drawings of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to Community Baptist Church and the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center to honor the civil rights leader. Pastor Vincent Thompson will receive the portrait at the church on Sunday, Jan. 18. MLK Center Executive Director Marilyn Warren will accept the drawing on Tuesday, Jan. 20.

Trinity Annual Meeting

The annual meeting of Trinity Church will be held on Sunday, Jan. 25, immediately after the 10 a.m. service. There will not be a coffee hour that day. The purpose of the meeting is to elect officers and members of the vestry, delegates to the diocesan convention, and to decide any other business that shall come before the meeting. Temple Family Series

Handbells at Calvary

The Calvary Handbell Choir is a music fellowship group of many ages and experience levels that plays for Sunday worship and other special services. All who want to try their hand at ringing a bell or two are welcome and no experience is required. The choir meets for rehearsal on Tuesday evenings from 6:45 - 7:30 p.m. in the sanctuary at Calvary United Methodist Church, 200 Turner Road, Middletown. Call 401-847-6181.

Warm Up Wednesdays

Neighbors are welcome to come in from the cold at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 12 Marlborough St., during Warm Up Wednesdays. Drop in anytime 1-4 p.m. and enjoy fellowship, games, and refreshments.
