Choristers Seek New Voices

The Newport Navy Choristers are looking for new singers in all voice ranges for the upcoming musical season. The mixed choral group is open to all members of the Newport Navy community, including active duty, reserve and retired military, spouses and family members 16 years of age and older, as well as Department of Defense employees.

Rehearsals will be on Tuesdays and begin Jan. 6 in Room 100 in Perry Hall; they run from 7-9:30 p.m. Membership dues are $15 for the semester or $25 for two or more family members. There are no auditions for the main chorus. While experience is helpful, it is not necessary.

Spouse Hiring Fair

Hiring Our Heroes will host a Military Spouse Virtual Hiring Fair on Thursday, Jan. 8, connecting job seekers with military-friendly employers online. The fair will run from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. The free fair is open to all military spouses, whether active duty, reserve or retired. Register online at hiringourheroes.org.

Phone Phishing Scam

There is a telephone phishing scam that may affect TRICARE beneficiaries, and all are advised to be on alert. Callers are trying to sell medical supplies (durable medical equipment, pain cream, etc.). Do not give any personal identifiable information (i.e., birth date, Social Security number, or banking information) to unknown sources. TRICARE will not call beneficiaries to offer services or ask for personal identification information. Information on reporting fraud is available at tricare.mil/fraud.

NHCNE Holiday Hours

The Naval Health Clinic New England will be closed on Thursday and Friday, Dec. 25 and 26. On Dec. 24 the clinic will be open regular hours from 7:30 a.m.-5 p.m. On Saturday, Dec. 27, the clinic will be open for acute appointments only from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. The clinic will be open regular hours on Wednesday, Dec. 31, but will be closed on Jan. 1. On Friday, Jan. 2, the clinic will be open only for acute appointments. Call 1-888-628-9633 for appointments.

Christmas Services

The Chapel of Hope will hold an ecumenical candlelight service on Christmas Eve at 6 p.m. and a Roman Catholic Mass at 9 a.m. on Christmas Day. Routine base access is required. Call 401-841-2234 for more information.

Traveling with TRICARE

As the holidays approach, many people make travel plans to visit family and friends. Remember, TRICARE benefits follow you wherever you go. For health care emergencies, always go directly to the nearest emergency room. For urgent conditions that cannot wait until you return home, contact your primary care manager (PCM) for approval. If you cannot reach your PCM, contact Health Net Federal Services for assistance at 1-800-TRICARE (1-800-874-2273). Before you travel, make sure you have enough prescription medication to last during your trip.

Intramural Basketball

The base intramural basketball season will run Jan. 12-March 19, and registration is being accepted through Jan. 5 at the John H. Chafee Fitness Center.

The program is open to active duty, retirees, reservists, eligible family members, and DoD civilians ages 18 and over. There is a $100 refundable forfeit fee per team. Teams must have matching shirts with numbers by the first game. There is a $15 fee for DoD civilians.

Games are played at the fitness center Monday-Thursday evenings at 5:30 and 6:30 p.m. There will be a coaches meeting on Monday, Jan. 5 at 4:30 p.m. For more information, call Greg at 401-841-3420 or the fitness center at 841-3154.

All hands are urged to familiarize themselves with methods used to communicate operational changes on the naval base. Notifications of base status will be provided on most major local television and radio stations. Up-to-date base conditions will also be posted on Facebook.
