Snowy Owl Makes an Early Appearance

Rey Larsen spied the raptor midflight later that afternoon. (Photo by Rey Larsen) A juvenile Snowy Owl has been reported in the Island Rocks section of the Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge. The diurnal raptor appeared to be resting and possibly foraging for prey. This is the earliest recorded arrival of this species at the refuge. It comes on the heels of last winter’s record irruption that saw four Snowy Owls take up a three-month residence at the refuge.
