Jewish High Holy Days

Jewish High Holy Days began with Rosh Hashanah at sundown Wednesday evening, Sept. 24, and continue until Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, on Saturday, Oct. 4.

Temple Shalom services are: Thursday, Sept. 25, 9 a.m. Rosh Hashanah traditional worship with Tashlich immediately following service, 7:30 p.m. Rosh Hashanah evening worship; Friday, Sept. 26, 10 a.m. Rosh Hashanah contemporary worship, 7:30 p.m. Shabbat Shuvah; Friday, Oct. 3, 6 p.m. Kol Nidre worship; Saturday, Oct. 4, 9 a.m. Yom Kippur, Yizkor recited, 5:30 p.m. closing worship. Newport’s Colonial African History

Channing Memorial Church and historian Theresa Guzman Stokes will present “Creative Survival: Thriving in a Slave Trade Port” on Tuesday, Sept. 30. Stokes will discuss African Americans who created their own self-help groups, educated their children, and formed their own churches. Zen at Channing

Channing Memorial Church offers Zen meditation Monday evenings from 7-8:30 p.m. in the parish hall, 135 Pelham St. This practice teaches how to clear the mind, understand the true self, and live with clarity and compassion. Healing Oils of the Bible

Newport Community Church will hold a talk on healing oils found in the Bible on Friday, Oct. 17, at 7:15 p.m. Ancient civilizations believed in the healing properties of essential oils and regarded them as highly prized possessions. Karina Sammons will discuss how the oils were used in biblical times for worship, healing and skin care, and how they’ve recently been rediscovered. Free, but registration is required. Music Workshops

Singer/songwriter Ana Hernandez returns to Emmanuel Church for two music workshops, “Practicing Presence: Singing as a Way to Peace and Freedom,” on Saturday, Oct. 4, 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m., and “The Sacred Art of Chant: Preparing to Practice,” on Sunday, Oct. 5, 4-5 p.m. Participants are welcome to stay for the “Sundays at 5” service, followed by a simple supper. Anniversary Celebration

Community Baptist Church will celebrate the 40th anniversary of the church with a showing of the film, “Facing the Giants,” on Friday, Oct. 10, at 7 p.m. The screening will take place at the Church Annex, 50 Dr. Marcus F. Wheatland Blvd. Popcorn and treats will be served. Guests are asked to bring church photos, memorabilia, stories, etc. to share. Suggested donation is $5 for individuals and $10 for a family. Words of Hope

Five island churches have banded together to offer the first Festival of Hope at Easton’s Beach on Friday, Oct. 3. The family-friendly event will feature Bill Buckner, former Red Sox first baseman; Greg Gagne, former shortstop for the Minnesota Twins; and ABC6 Sports Director Ken Bell offering “Words of Hope During Turbulent Times.” The free festival runs from 5-7 p.m. and will also include live music, food and kids’ activities. Everyone is welcome.

The Festival of Hope is sponsored by Evangelical Friends Church, CrossPoint Church, First Presbyterian Church of Newport, Portsmouth United Methodist Church and Salvation Army Newport.

‘Musica Italiana’ Concert

St. Peter’s Lutheran Church will host Newport Festa Italiana’s “Una Sera di Musica,” a night of Italian arias and melodies, on Sunday, Oct. 12, with soprano Cristina Fontanelli. The scholarship fundraising event begins with a reception at 6:30 p.m. followed by the concert at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $35 and may be purchased in advance by calling 401-847-4444 or 401-683- 4378.
