Local Scouts Honored

The Narragansett Council Boy Scouts of America held its annual Gathering of Eagles event at the Rhode Island State House on Sept. 3. Governor Lincoln D. Chafee recognized the group’s hard work and accomplishments. Chafee’s father, the late Senator John H. Chafee, was a Scout and Narragansett Council alum- nus. Two hundred seventy-two Scouts from the Narragansett Council earned Eagle in the last year, completing 30,228 hours of community service.

Troop 3 Newport

Brian Thomas Rayner received his Eagle Scout award earlier this summer at a scout candle ceremony at the Newport Elks Lodge. His leadership project was done at Fort Adams and involved cutting and splitting wood for firewood and building shelves to stack and store it. This project involved more than 15 scouts and parents and almost 200 hours of effort to benefit the Fort Adams Trust. He graduated from Rogers High School and is a freshman at Indiana University.

Troop 1 Portsmouth

Kyle Wentzel, 18, of Boy Scout Troop 1 was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout at a Court of Honor at the FOP Lodge #21 in Middletown in Aug. 17. Kyle is the son of Scott and Pat Wentzel of Portsmouth. To fulfill the Eagle Scout service project, Wentzel renovated the ticket booth and repainted the press box on the bleachers at the Portsmouth High School varsity football field. He graduated with the Class of 2014 from Portsmouth High. Troop 1 is sponsored by the Portsmouth Multi-Purpose Senior Center.
