Taking Me Fishing

In spite of rainy and windy conditions, over 200 participants took advantage of Take Me Fishing Day at Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge on Saturday, Aug. 2. According to U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service staff member Juan-Carlos Giese, “We had over 165 people sign up and use the loaner poles and bait that was available. Many folks also took advantage of the arts and crafts event in the visitor center.”

Rob Shafts and his daughter Avery, 7, of Jamestown, tried their hands at fishing. “We caught a lot of seaweed but we had a good time.” Justin Banz and his daughter Maddie, 6, and son Owen, 4, created fish-themed arts and crafts in the visitor center. “This is a great event for the kids and they learn as they create their projects,” Banz said.

USFWS staff member Neil Anthes was busy leading groups of aspiring anglers to trailside fishing spots that might yield the best casting results. “These folks are really having a good time. We’ve had whole families head out to try their luck and most of them are enjoying themselves despite the weather conditions.”
