Gulls Game Rescheduled

Due to heavy rain last week, the Raytheon Military Appreciation Night at the Newport Gulls game has been rescheduled to Thursday, July 31. The team will face off against the Laconia Muskrats at 6:35 p.m. on historic Cardines Field. Admission is free for all military personnel.

Navy Ball Car Wash

The Navy Ball committee will hold a car wash on Saturday, July 26, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the VFW off JT Connell Highway, Middletown, at 52 Underwood Lane. Funds raised will help reduce ticket costs for the Navy’s 239th birthday celebration on Oct. 3.

Navy Band Northeast

Look for Navy Band Northeast musicians at BridgeFest. The show band will play in Queen Anne Square at 6 p.m. on Thursday, July 31. That same day, the Crosswinds Woodwind Ensemble will play at Central Baptist Church, 99 Narragansett Ave., Jamestown at 7:30 p.m.

Feds Feed Friends

The annual Feds Feed Friends Campaign is approaching the halfway point and has collected almost 3,500 pounds of nonperishable food for local food banks and pantries. All federal employees, military and civilian, are encouraged to bring donations to the collection boxes at the Commissary, Navy Exchange and the Chapel of Hope. The campaign will run through August. Blood Drive

Navy Newport continues to support the Rhode Island Blood Center’s call for blood during the busy summer months. The Naval War College will host a drive on Tuesday, July 29, from 11 a.m.-2 p.m., in Spruance Lobby. All personnel with routine base access are invited to roll up their sleeves.

Special Forces Challenge

Teams and commands are invited to register for the Special Forces Challenge on Aug. 16 at the John H. Chafee Fitness Center. The event will incorporate functional fitness challenges and promote comradery in fun and demanding activities. Team registration will close on Aug. 7 and five people are needed for each team. Start time for the challenge is 8 a.m. For more information, call 401-841-3154.

Salute to Summer

The free Salute to Summer concert and fireworks display will be held Saturday, Aug. 23, on Dewey Field at Naval Station Newport, beginning at 5:30 p.m. Wayz and Means will open the show, followed by Navy Band Northeast’s Pops Ensemble. Fireworks will begin at approximately 9:15 p.m.

The event is open to the public. Guests are asked to bring lawn chairs and blankets, but reminded that backpacks, coolers, and outside food and drink are not permitted. Concessions and a children’s play area will be available. The general public may enter via Gate 1 beginning at 5 p.m.
