Concerned Over Trash Can Plan

To the Editor:

I am an avid runner who logs many, many miles all over Newport. Because of this, I have a unique perspective on the community, and the habits of its residents. Consequently, I know that I am not alone when I see trouble brewing for the new garbage plan set to take effect this fall.

Many people have voiced their legitimate concern that the required cans (64 gallons) will be far too big – for their personal needs, as well as for actually fitting them on their property. Well, how about this? For others – many others, including myself – they will be far too small. A recent online query of mine, followed by a call to the City of Newport, came up with nothing whatsoever about the city’s policy to offer extra cans to households requiring more. Nothing to date has been considered even for customers to purchase extra cans! Picture this: every single household in all of Newport using a single can for garbage! Neat idea, but completely unrealistic.

Which brings me back to my original point: all over town I see countless households that will share this problem with my own. Even with all our dutiful recycling, there is still lots of garbage, and the city will have a huge problem if they don’t accommodate this reality.

As strange as this may sound, I’m already feeling quite a pang of nostalgia for the good ol’ days when we free folks could just throw our garbage and recycling out in our own cans.
