Celebration of Ocean Education and Adventure

Betty and retired Rear Adm. Glenn Whistler Betty and retired Rear Adm. Glenn Whistler This year’s fundraiser for the SSV Oliver Hazard Perry, Rhode Island’s official sailing education vessel, celebrated an “Ocean of Education and Adventure,” with cocktails and a Blackstone-catered dinner at Newport Shipyard on Saturday, July 5. Proceeds from the evening the OHPRI organization’s educational programs.

When completed, the 200-foot Oliver Hazard Perry will be the largest Tall Ship of its kind to have been built in this country in the last 100 years. The Tall Ship Mystic, which will carry out OHPRI's teen summer camps and voyages this season, was dockside, while the Oliver Hazard Perry was “on the hard” in the shipyard. Guests also had the added bonus of seeing fireworks later that evening, which had been delayed because of the heavy rains on the Fourth of July.

Lisa Lewis and Bart Dunbar Lisa Lewis and Bart Dunbar Along with many supporters, OHPRI Chair Bart Dunbar is proud to have been able to guarantee the project’s success through partnerships with foundations, corporations, marine industry businesses, educational institutions, and individuals who believe in the value of this very important gift to the youth and the people of Rhode Island and beyond.
