Jazz Night at St. Joseph’s

St. Joseph’s parish, Mann Ave. and Broadway, will host a jazz night on Saturday, July 12, after the 5:15 p.m. Mass. The event will be held outside in the new Peace Garden (indoors if it rains). St. Lucy’s Movie Night

St. Lucy’s Church will screen the movie “The Shoes of the Fisherman” (1978) on Thursday, July 17, in the parish hall at 6 p.m. Starring Anthony Quinn and Sir Laurence Olivier, the film tells the story of Ukrainian Archbishop Kiril Lakota, who after twenty years in a Siberian labor camp becomes a cardinal and eventually Pope Kiril I. St. Lucy’s is at 909 West Main Road, Middletown. The movie is free and all are welcome.

Jesus Saviour Bazaar

Jesus Saviour Church will hold its annual summer bazaar on the church’s Vernon Avenue grounds Thursday-Saturday, July 24-26, from 7-11 p.m. each evening. The bazaar will feature bingo, games, white elephants, malassadas, and nightly dinner specials. A raffle drawing for cash will be held every night at 11 p.m.

Summer Community Chanting Group

The summer community chanting group will meet at Emmanuel Church, All Saints Chapel, 42 Dearborn St., on Saturdays, July 19, Aug. 16, and Sept. 20 from 9-10:30 a.m. Chanting is a form of meditation and improves receptivity and focus, raises energy levels, and helps listening skills. The group is open to all persons that want to learn the benefit of sound healing. Donations accepted in support of the church’s community meal program. St. Barnabas to Hold Recovery Mass

In cooperation with the Diocesan St. Matthias Recovery Ministry, the next quarterly Recovery Mass on the East Bay will be at St. Barnabas, 1697 East Main Rd., Portsmouth on Sunday, July 13, at 5 p.m. The Mass will focus on recovery from alcoholism and addiction. All are welcome.

Music on The Point

Music on The Point will present Music on the Lawn at the Church of St. John the Evangelist, Washington and Willow streets, on Thursday, July 17, from 6-8 p.m.

Mike Warner and The Ubiquitones, with special guest Tim Taylor on harmonica and vocals, will play an evening full of “Swampy, Lowdown, Hip Shaking Boogie Woogie and Blues.”

Fresh oysters from Bristol Farms will be available for purchase with appetizer plates, wine and ale. There will be limited seating and tables, so bring blankets.

The original deck house aboard the America’s Cup yacht Shamrock V, the “J-House,” will be onsite. For more information, call 401-848- 2561.

RCIA at St. Lucy’s

‘Godly Play’ at Emmanuel

Emmanuel Church will hold “Godly Play” sessions for children under the age of 18 on Sundays through Sept. 7 during the 10 a.m., service. Based in the Montessori tradition, Godly Play was developed and tested in classrooms for more than 20 years by Episcopal priest, author, and teacher Jerome Berryman. St. Barnabas Bake Sale

St. Barnabas Church, 1697 East Main Road, Portsmouth, will host a bake sale on Saturday and Sunday, July 12 and 13, after all Masses to benefit the Portsmouth High School track team.

Brunch at St. Clare’s

St. Clare’s Home will host a Berries & Bubbles Brunch on Sunday, July 13, at 11 a.m. at 309 Spring Street. The cost is $20 per person, $50 for a family of three or more. Call Mary Beth Daigneault at 401-849-3204 to reserve.

‘Mass on the Grass’

Trinity Church will hold outdoor worship on Sunday, July 20, overlooking Queen Anne Square and Newport harbor. The 10 a.m. service will be held on the lawn, but the 8 a.m. worship will be held in the church. For more information, call 401-846-0660.

‘Quarter ‘Til with Bach and Friends’

Take a 15-minute break during your weekends this summer to enjoy an organ meditation of music at Saint John the Evangelist by Bach and another composer, played on the church’s Hook and Hastings organ. Watch Peter S. Berton’s hands as he plays, via video, at 8:45 and 11:45 a.m. and 2:45, 5:45, and 8:45 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays until Labor Day. A donation of 25 cents is requested to benefit the organ restoration fund.

Emmanuel Lawn Fete

Emmanuel Church’s popular Lawn Fete will return on Saturday, July 12, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Proceeds from the current event will benefit outreach programs and provide funding for a wide range of assistance programs in the island community. Non-perishable food items will be collected for the Salvation Army. The day will feature local crafters, tea rooms, games, a dunk tank, children’s activities, raffles, and more.
