RECENT DEATHS

Canela “Nel” J. Bartis, 90, of Middletown, passed away June 21, 2014. He was the husband of Anastasia Bartis. He and his wife Ann and their sons owned and operated the Star Lunch restaurant on Broadway in Newport for more than 56 years. William F. Benisch II, 56, of Newport, passed away June 22, 2014 at Rhode Island Hospital, Providence. He was a dry cleaner at Del Nero Cleaners for more than 38 years. He leaves behind his two daughters, Selene Benisch of Bristol, and Kayla Benisch of Newport, and his step-daughter, Shannon Edwards of Middletown. Visitation with the family will be Friday, June 27, from 11 a.m. to noon at Memorial Funeral Home. A memorial service will follow at noon in the funeral home.

Alan Monterde Codilla, 61, of Middletown, passed away June 18, 2014 at home. He was the husband of Cerilane Codilla. He served in the U.S. Navy for 23 years. He also leaves his children; Gilmore, Gwendolyn, and Guenevere “Gigi” Codilla, and Gilda Bullard, all of Middletown. He was buried with military honors in St. Columba Cemetery, Middletown.

Charles M. Connor, 75, of Middletown, passed away June 22, 2014 at Newport Hospital. He was the husband of Mary C. (Riley) Connor. He was a Newport County Deputy Sheriff for 21 years. Calling hours will be Monday, June 30, from 4-7 p.m. at the Memorial Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, July 1, at 9 a.m. at St. Lucy’s Church, Middletown. Thomas E. Hughes, 74, of Newport and Fort Myers, Fla. passed away suddenly on June 19, 2014 at home. He was the husband of Betty (Devine) Hughes. Donations in his memory may be made to American Heart Association, 1 State St., Suite 200 Providence RI 02908.

James A. King, 86, of Middletown, passed away on June 21, 2014 at the Village House in Newport. He was the husband of Olinda (Almeida) King. He was a U.S. Army veteran and served in the Korean War. Donations in his memory may be made to Village House, 70 Harrison Ave., Newport, RI 02840.

Edward Reeves Massey, 86, of Newport, passed away June 19, 2014 at Village House Nursing Home, Newport. He was the former husband of the late Barbara Carter Massey and the longtime companion of the late Rose Ribero McCray. He also leaves his children: Ned, Eric, Donna, and Karen Massey, Edward Massey Jr., Lisa G. Neves, and Deborah Greene, all of Newport, and Sloane Massey of Pawtucket.

Chester Franklin Mosher Sr., 89, of Newport, passed away June 22, 2014, at Elmhurst Extended Care, Providence. He was the husband of the late Muriel (Pearson) Mosher. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Funeral services were private. William Newbolt, 54 of Newport, passed away June 16, 2014 at Newport Hospital after a long illness. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and the RI Army National Guard. Donations in his memory may be made to the Graceway Community Church, 215 Forest Ave., Middletown, RI 02842.

Jennifer Lynn O’Hanley, 38, of Newport, passed away unexpectedly on June 17, 2014 at home. She is survived by her son Gage, her daughters Kyra and Julia, and her former husband Peter O’Hanley, all of Newport. Her funeral will be Friday, June 27, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Lucy’s Church, Middletown.

Winifred Claire (Wilson) Silvia, 63, of Newport, passed away June 22, 2014. She was the wife of Joseph Silvia. Calling hours will be Thursday, June 26, from 4 -8 p.m. at the Memorial Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian burial will be June 27, at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church, Newport. Edith Mae Strother, 77, of Newport, passed away June 15, 2014 at the Heatherwood Nursing Home.

Arthur Richard Weekley, 77, of Middletown, passed away June 18, 2014 of injuries sustained in a collision with a deer while biking on Ocean Drive in Newport on June 9. He was the husband of Sara Eastman Chadwick. He also leaves behind his two daughters, Linda Marcus and Lesa Briggs. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. Donations in his memory may be made to the St. Columba’s Historic Preservation Fund.

Grace Virginia (Deplitch) Weibust, 90, of Newport, passed away June 21, 2014 at the Village House, Newport. She was the wife of the late Lloyd Walker Weibust. She leaves behind her sons, Lloyd Weibust and his wife, Beth, of Jamestown, and Richard Weibust and his wife, Marianne, of Middletown. Donations in her memory may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
