The award will be presented on June 11 at a reception from 5:30 - 7:00 p.m. at the Edward King House. Since 2008, Wood has been the director of the United Methodist Community Gardens. Under her leadership, the garden has increased its yield tenfold, lengthened its growing season by the introduction of two hoop houses, and secured grants to install timed irrigation, dig a new well, and build raised gardens to accommodate handicapped volunteers.

The garden provides produce to numerous shelters, soup kitchens, and community centers on Aquidneck Island. From June through September the garden operates a farm stand program for qualified neighbors needing assistance, and throughout the growing season, Community Garden volunteers deliver flowers regularly to assistedliving facilities and nursing homes.

The award honors the life of Joan C. Arnold, a member of the League of Women Voters of Newport County and Rhode Island, who passed away in 2011.
