The Clagett a ‘Must Do’ in Sailing

Joy and Ian Scott Joy and Ian Scott More than 200 people attended the second annual C. Thomas Clagett, Jr. Regatta Spring Fundraiser held Saturday, May 17. The scenic Newport Cliff Walk and Atlantic Ocean served as the backdrop to the cocktail party, hosted by Victoria and Joe Mele. Guests enjoyed a wonderful spring evening and saw many fantastic silent auction items go home with the winning bidders.

The Clagett Regatta benefit raises money to help get more sailors with a disabilities on the water to discover the joys of sailing and experience the thrill of competition on the water. The C. Thomas Clagett, Jr. Memorial Clinic and Regatta, founded by Judy and Stephanie McLennan in memory of Judy’s father, was first held 12 years ago in Newport and has become the premier disabled sailing regatta in North America

The mission statement of the Clagett clinic and regatta is “to provide sailors with disabilities the opportunity to improve their skills and reach personal goals through world-class coaching and competition.” In the 12-year history of the event, it has become known as “a must do” on the North American disabled sailing calendar.

Leith Adams and Scott Mawhinney Leith Adams and Scott Mawhinney Competitors from across the USA, Canada and the US Virgin Islands have registered to take part in the three classes that race at the Clagett: the 2.4mR single handed boat, the SKUD 18 double-handed skiff, and the Sonar, a three-person keel boat. The clinic, which precedes the regatta each year, will take place on June 12 and racing follows June 13–15. The Clagett is hosted by Sail Newport at Fort Adams State Park with the competing boats being docked at the Alofsin Pier.
