Spring Bird Count Results

The 30th annual Conanicut Island Spring Bird Count was conducted recently. what started out as a rainy morning turned into a beautiful day for birding. According to Chris Powell, one of the participants, 93 species of birds were sighted and recorded by nine field observers. Highlights of the count included two, late season, Long-tailed Ducks that were sighted in the Fort Getty area, 13 species of migratory warblers which included 78 Yellow Warblers, Orchard and Baltimore orioles, Bobolinks, and five Scarlet Tanagers. A number of raptor species were reported, including Red-tailed Hawks, Cooper’s Hawks, two Peregrine Falcons, and 10 Ospreys.

The best time to see these small colorful birds is just after dawn until about 10 a.m. and after 5-6 p.m.
