IYRS Graduation and Launching Day

In what might be the most unusual aspect of any graduation ceremony nationwide, the boatbuilding students at the International Yacht Restoration School will launch the vessels they have built and restored during the course of their training on Saturday, May 31, following commencement in Restoration Hall. For both Newport and the school, the graduation has become a community celebration, attracting hundreds of supporters, admirers, community leaders, and industry partners.

International yachtsman Dr. Robert McNeil, who owns and is funding the restoration of Coronet on the IYRS campus, will speak at the ceremonies. Coronet was first launched in 1885 and was one of the most elegant sailing yachts of her day.

Graduation begin at 10 a.m. at 449 Thames St. Following the program, the crowd is invited to the school docks to watch the launching of the newly-restored boats. The public is welcome. For more information, visit iyrs.org.
