Echo Taps

The Echo Taps ceremony will take place at the R.I. Veterans Cemetery in Exeter on Saturday, May 17. Volunteer brass players and spectators of all ages are welcome. Brass players should muster at the cemetery at 11 a.m. to practice. Volunteer flag line participants muster by 11:30 a.m. Ceremonial Taps "in the round" starts at noon. Tattered American Flags

Do you have faded, torn, or tattered American flags that need to be disposed of? If so, bring them to the Building 690 Atrium on the naval base and place them in the Flag Day Unserviceable Flag Collection box now through June 11. A specific method is used to properly dispose of our national ensign. The Portsmouth American Legion will conduct a flag retirement ceremony on Flag Day, Saturday, June 14.

Military Spouses Elect New Board

The Military Spouses of Newport recently elected its 2014- 2015 Executive Board. Taking office are President Jay Ha'o, Vice President Marlith Austin, Secretary Kelly Maher and Treasurer Annette Recavarren. For more information, visit milspousenewport.org.

Blood Drives

The Rhode Island Blood Center will hold a base drive on Tuesday, May 27, in the Navy Supply Corps School multipurpose room, from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Spouse Night Out

The next Military Spouses of Newport Night Out will be Thursday, May 29, at Perro Salado, 19 Charles St. Join military friends at 6:30 p.m. for a no-host evening of fun and good food. Register at milspousenewport.org.

Eight Bells Lecture

The Naval War College Museum’s Eight Bells Lecture Series will continue on Thursday, May 22, at noon, with “The Liberty Incident Revealed: The Definitive Account of the 1967 Israeli Attack on the U.S. Navy Spy Ship,” by A. Jay Cristol.

The Eight Bells series is free and open to the public, but seating is limited and advance reservations are strongly suggested. To reserve and arrange for base access, call 401-841-7276 at least one work day prior to event.

Spouse Event

Military Spouses of Newport will gather for a Night of Fashion at White House Black Market, 49 Long Wharf Mall, on Wednesday, May 21, from 7-9 p.m., after regular business hours. The store is putting on a special event for the spouse group, with a fashion show, information on the latest fashion tips and trends, and light refreshments. The event is free but space is limited. MWR Intramural Softball

Softball season is just around the corner and the MWR session will run June 2 – Aug. 4. Games will be played Monday – Thursday at Carr Point at 5:30 and 6:30 p.m. The co-ed league is open to active duty, retirees, eligible family members, reservists and DoD employees. Contractors are not eligible. Players must be 18 years old. Registration packets are available at the John H. Chafee Fitness Center front desk and there will be a coaches/captains meeting in the fitness center office on Monday, May 19, at 4:30 p.m. For more information, call Greg at 401-841- 3420.
