On the Road to Success

The Pell Elementary School hosted the spring Walk to School Day on Friday, May 9, with students, parents, teachers, civic leaders, and community members joining the “Walking School Bus” teams to march from three city sites to the campus. The daily Walking School Bus is a program that began last fall to encourage youngsters to walk to school, promoting on-time attendance, camaraderie, and physical activity. Students meet volunteers at their stops each day and are escorted safely to school. The Pell School is less than three-quarters of a mile from the homes of approximately 40 percent of the student body. Pictured are (left to right) Madeline Leddy, Ayden Sivley, Adelaid Phelan, Millenia Calapia, and Maria Coval. Newport’s Bike to Work day will be held Friday, May 16, beginning with a commuter breakfast, 6-9 a.m., in Washington Square.
