Newport Hospital recently recognized the commitment of the hospital’s 262 volunteers at an awards luncheon that highlighted their accomplishments. The reception, held at the Officers’ Club at Naval Station Newport, showcased all hospital volunteers, with special attention for those reaching milestones and to the volunteers receiving “Shining Star” awards.

Dedication and commitment were key attributes of the recipients of the Shining Star award. This year, three volunteers received that special honor: Eric Shaw of Newport, and his golden retriever Squall, who bring comfort to patients in the hospital’s behavioral health unit; Nanci Stewart of Newport, who volunteers three days a week at the information desk; and Kelly Johnson of Newport, who provides assistance in the executive administration suite.

Volunteers recognized for Years of Service milestones include:

10-year awards -- Fran Amoruso of Middletown, Betty Shea of Newport, Toni Mills of Newport, Joan Hopper of Portsmouth and Marilyn Oglo of Portsmouth.

15-year award – Mary Ellen Blass of Middletown.

25-year award – Martin Kinsella of Middletown.

Volunteers at Newport Hospital serve in a number of key roles, such as greeting patients and visitors as AQUIDNECK ISLAND ACUPUNCTURE they enter the hospital; knitting hats for newborns; providing clerical assistance in patient units and administrative offices; transporting patients within the hospital; and staffing the gift shop.
