America’s Favorite Pastime

To the Editor:

The George Donnelly Sunset League opened up its 95th season this past Sunday. I would like to take a moment and thank everyone involved in getting the season off and running. There are a lot of people to thank for our success throughout the years. Without the fans that we have, we would not be where we are today, 95 years old and going strong. Some great baseball is played at Cardines throughout the summer, and a chance to see a game at the historic ballpark is priceless. For 95 seasons, the George Donnelly Sunset League has called Cardines Field home. There have been many great games played during those years and many terrific teams have taken the field. We have had 151 teams play in the league since 1919. Teams from all across Newport, representing every ward and area of the great city. I am truly honored to be able to look after the GDSL now and into the future. It is a great hidden gem amongst a city that boasts many treasures. I encourage you to take the time to walk down to the ballpark, take a step back in time, and watch some great baseball.
