St. Pat's Parade Winners Honored

Newporters love a the annual St. Patrick's Day parade and those who participate are appreciated. Awards were presented in more than a dozen categories at the Extreme Brewing Co. on Thursday, April 24. The newly-formed AOH men’s singers from the Hibernian Hall added an extra Irish flair to the evening of celebration. Joe Brady, David Kerins and Wick Rudd crooned verses from the traditional Irish ballad “Red is the Rose.”

2014 Parade Grand Marshal, Bobby O'Neill, (above and left) was the evening’s master of ceremonies. At left, St. Philomena’s School was recognized for Best Youth Unit and above, Don Chilton from the Newport Public School Music Department accepted the Best Brass Unit for the Rogers High School Jazz Band and Best Youth Band for the Thompson Middle School Band. Also seen here are members from the Kentish Guards Fife and Drum Corps from East Greenwich, who came to accept the plaque for Best Historic Fife & Drum Band.

Floats are hands-down the favorite parts of any parade. Folks from the Landing Restaurant and Clean Ocean Access heartily accepted their accolades for Best Float. Also in attendance were Tony Lepore, aka Tony the Dancing Cop, and several members from the Palestine Temple Shrine Clown unit who were recognized as Best Crowd Pleasers.
