Daffodillion Honors Donors

Ronald Fleming and Governor Lincoln Chafee Ronald Fleming and Governor Lincoln Chafee A happy, “daffy” time was had by all at The Chanler reception honoring contributors to the Daffodillion planting project. John Hirschboeck, Daffodillion project director, offered a “daffy welcome” but center stage went to Ronald Lee Fleming who was given the key to the city by Mayor Henry F. Winthrop in honor of his ongoing leadership. Governor Lincoln D. Chafee also recognized Fleming, the Daffodil Project founder and chair, for his citywide beautification efforts. Thousands of daffodil bulbs were planted last fall, supported by nearly two dozen individuals, businesses, and organizations that contributed $375 or more in honor of Newport’s 375th anniversary.

The daffodils may be in bloom, but the committee is still working. Another free bulb giveaway is planned for October.

Daffodillion peaks this weekend with the Newport Daffodil Days Festival at Bannister’s Wharf. Highlights include a daffy dog, hat and children’s costume parade on Saturday at 1 p.m., live music on Sunday afternoon and “daffy hour” cocktails at the Clarke Cooke House and Black Pearl on Friday and Saturday from 4-6 p.m.
