National Arboretum Week in Newport

Celebrate the unparalleled beauty of Newport’s urban landscape at events across the city during National Arboretum Week, April 21-26. The Pell Center will host “Beyond Legend: Reimagining Newport’s Urban Forest” on Monday, April 21 with a thoughtprovoking presentation about the past, present and future of Newport’s trees. The free event runs 5-7 p.m. and includes light refreshments.

The Preservation Society of Newport County will host a free guided tree walk on the grounds of Kingscote on Wednesday, April 23, at 11 a.m., led by Jeff Curtis, Preservation Society Director of Gardens and Grounds, and Scott Wheeler, Newport Tree Warden.

Kids and trees go together naturally. Meet at Morton Park on Tuesday, April 22 at 1 p.m. for a fun afternoon with Newport City Forester Charlie Ridolf. He will lead a tree walk and demonstrate using the bucket truck to care for the trees. On Thursday, April 24, children ages 4-8 and their families are invited on a tree walk around Aquidneck Park with Tree Warden Scott Wheeler at 11 a.m., followed by a reading of “The Giving Tree” at the Newport Library. Children will receive free a book about trees.

The Newport Art Museum will present “Delicate Armor” on Wednesday, April 23 at 3 p.m. with Deborah Coolidge discussing the tree as an art form. Regular museum admission.

Arborist Robert Currier and restoration bookbinder James Currier will open the Redwood Library vault to explore special antique books from the library’s horticultural collection on Thursday, April 24 at 3:30 p.m. The fee is $5, payable at the door.

Sardella’s Restaurant will host Newport Arboretum Night on Thursday, April 24 from 5 p.m. until closing, donating 20 percent of all receipts for the evening to the Newport Arboretum. Eat, drink and be merry -for a good cause.

A special Arbor Day tree planting ceremony will be held at Newport City Hall on Friday, April 25 at 2 p.m. to commemorate city’s 375th anniversary, and to wrap up the week, Scott Wheeler and a panel of arborists will hold a “Conversation about Newport Trees” at the Newport Pubic Library on Saturday, April 26 at 2 p.m.
