Eight Bells Lecture

The Naval War College Museum’s Eight Bells Lecture Series will continue on Thursday, April 10 with Carl LaVO presenting “Pushing the Limits: The Remarkable Life and Times of Vice Admiral Allan Rockwell McCann, USN,” at noon.

LaVO presents an overdue appreciation of a man who had an extraordinary career following his graduation from the United States Naval Academy in 1913. McCann saw action in both World War I and II, was involved in the rescue of survivors from USS Squalus (SS 192) and the development of the McCann Submarine Rescue Chamber, and was tasked by President Truman to investigate the Revolt of the Admirals.

The Eight Bells series is free and open to the public, but seating is limited and advance reservations are strongly suggested. To reserve and arrange for base access, call 401-841-1296 at least one work day prior to event.

Lent Series at Chapel of Hope

The last in the series of the Chapel of Hope’s Wednesday night Lenten series, “Walk as Jesus Walked,” will be held on April 9. Enjoy soup and bread at 6 p.m., followed by the program at 6:30 p.m. For more information, call the chapel at 401-841-2234.

Carr Point RV Park

Reservations for the Carr Point RV Park will begin on Tuesday, April 15. The spots are available on a first come, first served basis and cost $20 a day for military and $24 for DoD civilians. To reserve, call 401- 841-2091. The park is open from Memorial Day weekend through Columbus Day weekend.

MilSpouse Book Group

The next meeting of the Military Spouses of Newport Evening Book Club will meet on Monday, April 7 at 7 p.m. to discuss “Gift from the Sea,” by Anne Morrow Lindbergh. Rowing Workshop

The John H. Chafee Fitness Center will hold a rowing workshop on Wednesday, April 9 from 11 a.m. -1 p.m. and 3-5 p.m. Patrick Larcom, from Renegade Rowing, will teach proper rowing technique, address common problems, and show how to train and race utilizing machines. At the end of the workshop there will be a contest using the Concept2Race Simulator. Space is limited. Sign up at the Chafee Fitness Center front desk or call 401-841-3154.
