Newport Fire Incident Run Report

During the period from Monday, March 3 through Sunday, March 9, the Newport Fire Department responded to 99 calls. Of those, 56 were emergency medical calls, resulting in 45 patients being transported to the hospital. Additionally, 6 patients refused aid once EMS arrived on the scene.

Fire apparatus was used for 99 responses: Station 1 - Headquarters/Rescue 1
and 3 responded to 39 calls
Station 1 - Engine 1 and 6
responded to 31 calls
Station 2 - Old Fort Road Rescue 2
responded to 23 calls
Station 2 - Old Fort Road Engine 2
responded to 13 calls
Station 5 - Touro Street/Engine 3
and 5 responded to 28 calls

In the category of fire prevention, the department performed 7 smoke alarm / CO inspections prior to property sales, and 21 life safety / site inspections, 14 fire system plan reviews.

FIRE PREVENTION MESSAGE- Escape Planning- In 2012, there were an estimated 365,000 reported home structure fires and 2,380 associated civilian deaths in the United States. Your ability to get out of the home during a fire emergency depends on advance warning from smoke alarms and advance planning. Fire can spread rapidly through your home, leaving you as little as two minutes to escape safely once the alarm sounds. Pull together everyone in your household and make a plan. Walk through your home and inspect all possible exits and escape routes and then test your smoke alarms. Involve your children. Have them draw a floor plan of your home, marking two ways out of each room, including windows and doors. Once out- stay out.

New Senior Restaurant Program

East Bay Community Action Program (EBCAP) has implemented a new dining option for seniors, under its East Bay Café Program, at the IHOP Restaurant, Middletown.

The Senior Restaurant Program is open to individuals 60 years of age or older, and vouchers for the program, which must be obtained prior to dining, are available at the Edward King House Senior Center. A donation of $5 per voucher is suggested. Vouchers are redeemable at IHOP during the hours of 7- 10:30 a.m. and 4:30-8 p.m. Diners may select from a limited menu of five nutritionally balanced entrees.

Newport Police Log

During the period from Monday, March 3 to Sunday, March 9 , the Newport Police Department responded to 532 calls. Of those, 130 were motor vehicle related; there were 98 motor vehicle violations issued, and 32 accident reports. The police also responded to 3 noise complaints, 15 animal complaints, 4 suicide calls, 31 home/business alarm calls, and 4 incidents of vandalism. They also transported 5 prisoners. They recorded 4 instances of assisting other police departments and also recorded 10 instances of assisting other agencies.

In addition, 21 arrests were made
for the following violations:
n 4 arrests were made for arson.
n 3 arrests were made for outstanding bench warrants.
n 3 arrests were made for DUI.
n 2 arrests were made for domestic simple assault.
n1 arrest was made for conditions of a Family Court order.
n 1 arrest was made for driving
with a suspended or revoked
n 1 arrest was made for obtaining money under false pretenses.
n 1 arrest was made for possession of narcotics.
n 1 arrest was made for violating
a no-contact order.

Municipal Court

Judge J. Russell Jackson presided
at the Municipal Court session held
on Monday, March 10, at Newport
City Hall. The Court adjudicates cases related to city ordinances, parking, and traffic infractions.
There were 10 matters on the
nBench warrants were issued for
two defendents who faliled to appear for charges of underage possession of alcohol.
nOf the two open container cases,
one was continued and one was
closed and paid in full.
nFive drivers were charged with
traffic infractions; one pleaded no
contest and was fined $85, the other four received default judgments
and were each fined $85 plus court
fees of $35.
nOne zoning matter regarding
tree removal was continued.

Police St. Pat’s Party

The Newport Police Department will host a St. Patrick’s Day Party on Monday, March 17 to raise funds for the Police Unity Tour, a 300-mile bike ride honoring officers who have died in the line of duty. The benefit will take place at the Speak- Easy Bar & Grill, 250 Thames St., beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Tickets are $15 and include a complimentary buffet, drink voucher and raffle ticket. The raffle will be held at approximately 9:30 p.m.

Arnold Award

The League of Women Voters of Newport County is calling for applications for the third annual Joan C. Arnold Civic Participation Award. The recipient/s must be a resident of or work in Newport County. In addition to the award, the League will make a $100 donation to the charity of the award winner’s choice. Rosemary Forbes-Woodside of Jamestown was the recipient of the first award presented in 2012 and Judith Webb of Newport received the award in 2013. ‘Incarceration Nation’ at Salve

The Pell Center for International Relations and Public Policy at Salve Regina University will host “Incarceration Nation,” a panel discussion on why America incarcerates more of its citizens than any other country, on Thursday, March 20 at 7 p.m. in Bazarsky Hall.

‘Finding Vivian Maier’

NewportFILM comes to the Newport Art Museum on Thursday, March 20 with the documentary “Finding Vivian Maier.” Now considered one of the 20th century's greatest street photographers, Maier was a mysterious nanny who secretly took more than 100,000 photographs that went unseen during her lifetime. Her strange and riveting life and art are revealed through never-before-seen photographs, films, and interviews with dozens who thought they knew her. Cocktails and hors d'oeuvres begin at 6 p.m. and the screening is at 7 p.m. There will be a post-film Skype conversation with director Charlie Siskel. Rite of Spring Program

The annual Rite of Spring program, consisting of music, poetry and dance will be held Thursday, March 20 at 12:30 p.m. in Equality Park on Broadway. A highlight of the event will be the egg-balancing at 12:57 p.m. Bring your own egg, fresh or hard-boiled, or obtain a “golden egg” for $1 from the committee. Lyme Support Group

The next Lyme Support Group is Thursday, March 13 at 6 p.m. and on the third Thursdays of following months. The group is open to anyone who wishes to discuss Lyme disease, including relatives or friends. This month they will be discussing the LDA conference on May 3 and 4 and Tick Borne Diseases Day on May 10. The support group meets at Harbor House, 111 Washington St., between Van Zandt and Battery. Athletic Hall of Fame

The Middletown High School Athletic Hall of Fame is accepting applications for the 2014 Induction Class. Nominees can be individual athletes who graduated from MHS, former coaches, a team, or someone who has been an avid supporter of the athletic program. Individuals nominated must have graduated ten or more years ago. Coaches nominated must have finished coaching their sport 5 or more years ago. Teams should be from ten or more years ago.
