Scanners at Gate

Personnel entering the naval station are advised to have their Department of Defense ID cards out and ready to hand to the guard prior to approaching the gates. Handheld scanners will be implemented on the base March 24 and personnel are advised to visit the gate during off peak hours ahead of time to have the initial scan done. The guard will take the ID card to upload information contained therein. The initial scan will take 30-60 seconds per card.

Traffic Impacts Clinic Appointments

Patients at Naval Health Clinic New England are asked to plan accordingly for their appointments to reduce the impact of delays on Connell Highway and around the traffic circle due to the ID checks at Gate 1. Delays may be minimized by approaching the clinic on Third Street from the west, allowing for entrance to the clinic without having to go through the Connell Highway circle.

Chapel of Hope Lent Series

The Chapel of Hope will host a Soup and Bread series on Wednesday evenings through April 9. Enjoy soup and bread at 6 p.m., followed by the program “Walk as Jesus Walked” at 6:30 p.m., led by Chaplain Carl Trost. For more information, call the chapel at 401- 841-2234.

Celebrate St. Patrick's Day

In honor of St. Patricks’ Day, the Officers’ Club will serve corned beef and cabbage all day on Monday, March 17. For more information, call 401-841-1442.

Spouse Night Out

Military Spouses of Newport will hold a no-host dinner at De- Wolf Tavern, 259 Thames St., Bristol on Thursday, March 20 at 7 p.m. Register at milspousenewport.org.

Swim Meet

The John H. Chafee Fitness Center will host a free swim meet on Thursday, March 27 for active duty personnel, retirees, reservists, eligible family members (ages 16 and over) and DoD employees with base access. Registration is ongoing at the fitness center front desk.

Teams must be registered by Monday, March 24, with a minimum of four swimmers per team.

Teams may practice 1-2 p.m. and 6-7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 25. Warm-up lanes will be available starting at 5:30 p.m. on meet day. Teams are to check in at the pool by 5:45 p.m.; meet begins at 6:10 p.m. For more information, call 401-841-7355.

Sea Cadet Open House

The NETC Newport Sea Cadet Unit will hold its first drill and open house on Saturday, March 15 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Navy Operational Support Center, Bldg. 345, Easton St. All personnel with routine base access are welcome to attend. Eight Bells Lecture

The Naval War College Museum’s Eight Bells Lecture Series will continue on Thursday, March 20 with Erik Chaput presenting “The People’s Martyr: Thomas Wilson Dorr and his 1842 Rhode Island Rebellion” at noon.

The Eight Bells series is free and open to the public, but seating is limited and advance reservations are strongly suggested. To reserve and arrange for base access, call 401-841-7276 at least one work day prior to event.

Indoor Triathlon

MWR will host the annual indoor triathlon on Thursday, March 20 from 6 a.m.-5 p.m. at the John H. Chafee Fitness Center. Contestants will swim 450 meters in the pool, bike 10 miles on a spin bike, and run two miles on the track. The triathlon is free and open to active duty personnel, retirees, reservists, eligible family members and DoD civilians. Register at the Fitness Center Trainer's Corner. SNA 5K By The Bay

Spring won’t be here for a few more days but registration is already under way for the Surface Navy Association’s annual 5K By The Bay run scheduled for Friday, May 16 at 5 p.m. The USATF-certified course draws runners from across New England for the scenic race around the naval station. Trophies will be awarded to the first male and female runners and best overall team, and medals will be presented to the top three finishers in each age group. St. Patrick's Day Fun Run

All hands are welcome to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with a three-mile fun run/1.5 mile walk on Wednesday, March 19. The event begins at noon at the John H. Chafee Fitness Center, and there will be door prizes and refreshments after the race. Awards will be presented to the top male and female finishers. Great Decisions Series

The Newport Council for International Visitors will host the next seminar in the Great Decisions Series on Tuesday, March 18 on “Turkey’s Challenges.” The program will be held at the North End Steakhouse, Best Western Mainstay, with social hour at 6 p.m. and the presentation at 7 p.m.

Submarine Veterans to Meet

The Rhode Island Base of the United States Submarine Veterans Inc. will hold its monthly meeting beginning at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 20 at the USS Saratoga Museum Foundation building, 6854 Post Rd., North Kingstown. For additional information, call 401-849- 7282.
