Maidford Project will Cause Beach Closure

A cooperative effort between the Town of Middletown, the Norman Bird Sanctuary and the Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge is being undertaken to improve drainage of the Maidford River at Third Beach in Middletown. National Wildlife Refuge and Middletown staff will be working to clear excess sand at the mouth of the Maidford River in order to allow water to flow unimpeded into the Sakonnet River. A small portion of Third Beach at the mouth of the Maidford River will be closed to the public while large construction equipment is being utilized for two weeks during the period of March 10-22. The sand removed will be used to construct a sand dune across from the Navy Beach parking lot, helping to assure resiliency of the dune, improving habitat for the Threatened Piping Plover, and reducing flooding of the salt marsh.
