Behan Named Hibernian of the Year

By Jack Kelly

Peter Behan, a native Newporter and Fifth Warder, has been named the recipient of the 2014 Hibernian of the Year award. Behan has been a member of the Dennis E. Collins Division of the Ancient Order of Hibernians since 1984, and is being recognized for his many contributions to the organization. Behan is best known for his involvement in the annual “Pig Roast Fundraiser,” which requires a great deal of logistical planning. He is also active with the entertainment committee and performs a host of other duties during Hibernian functions.

Behan, a local electrical contractor, is a member of the House Committee, which maintains the electrical, plumbing, and general infrastructure of Hibernian Hall. According to Behan’s fellow Hibernians, “Peter is one of the guys we can count on to be there when he’s needed. He’s a committed member who does the things that need to be done. Whether setting up functions, breaking down, cleaning up, he’s always willing to help when we need him.”

“I am proud and honored to be chosen for this award, because it was voted on and given by the guys I grew up with. Since I have been a Hibernian for all these years, I appreciate it very much,” Behan said.

Behan will be honored by his family, friends and fellow Hibernians during a dinner beginning with cocktails at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 8, at Hibernian Hall. Tickets are $25 and may be purchased at the hall or by calling 847-8671.
