Transportation at Forefront

Plans for an interim 18-mile bikeway traversing the western shores of Newport, Middletown, and Portsmouth were unveiled by the Aquidneck Island Planning Commission last July. The path is seen as the first step in the long-range goal of developing a safe, scenic Shoreline Bikeway along the island that has an estimated cost of $26 million and a construction timeline of 10 years. The trail is among the major projects being advanced by the commission, which recently announced changes to its management structure. (Rendering by Vanasse Hangen Brustlin, Inc.)
