Flu Clinics

In light of the recent spike in flu cases, the Naval Health Clinic New England is offering a Saturday flu clinic on Jan. 11 from 10 a.m.-1:45 p.m. The clinic will offer FluMist nasal spray, flu vaccine injections, and Fluzone HD. Additionally, the vaccines are available Monday-Friday, from 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m. on a walk-in basis.

Spouse Art Party

Military Spouses of Newport will head to the Drink and Dabble traveling art party on Wednesday, Jan. 22, 6:30-9 p.m. No experience is necessary and artist Charlie Hall will offer step-by-step instructions. The event will be held upstairs at Aquidneck Pizza, 27 Aquidneck Ave, Middletown. The cost is $30 for club members, $40 for non-members, and all materials will be provided. Register at milspousenewport.org by Tuesday, Jan. 21.

Blood Drives

The Rhode Island Blood Center will hold base drives on Tuesday, Jan. 14 in the Bobby Burke Lounge at Surface Warfare Officers School from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. and at the Naval War College on Thursday, Jan. 16, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. in Spruance Lobby. All donors will receive a pound of Dunkin’ Donuts coffee.

New Ensigns

Sixty-two ensigns will receive their commissions in ceremonies to be held Friday, Jan. 10 at 10:30 a.m. in Kay Hall on the naval station. The guest speaker will be Rear Adm. Donald Quinn, Commander Naval Education and Training Center. All hands with routine base access are welcome to attend. For more information, call 401-841-1171.

Intramural Basketball

Intramural basketball is set to begin at the John H. Chafee Fitness Center on Jan. 13 and willrun through March. 14. The program is open to active duty, retirees, reservists, eligible family members and DoD civilians ages 18 and over.

Registration is ongoing through Friday, Jan. 24, Monday-Friday from 8 a.m.-4 p.m.

Games are played at the fitness center Monday-Thursday evenings. For more information, call the Chafee Fitness Center at 401-841-3154.

Workshops

The Fleet and Family Support Center will offer “Communication: For Better or for Worse” on Wednesday, Jan. 15 from 2:30 -3:30 p.m., and a workshop on stress management will be held on Friday, Jan. 17 from 2:30-3:30 p.m. Call 401-841-2283 for more information or to register.

All hands are urged to familiarize themselves with methods used to communicate operational changes on the naval station. Notifications of base status will be provided on most major local television and radio stations. Up-to-date base conditions will also be posted on Facebook.
