A Frigid Dip Starts 375th

Every New Year's Day, the Newport Polar Bears invite anyone crazy enough to join them to jump into the frosty waters off Easton’s Beach for charity. This year’s beneficiary is the A Wish Come True organization, dedicated to granting wishes to critically ill children, and all monies raised at the event and the after-plunge party at the Atlantic Beach Club go to the charity. Crowd estimates had more than 1000 shivering on the sands at this year Polar Bear Plunge. (TOP photo by Jason Carboneau) Several hundred more took a dip in the salty brine. (Photo by Jack Kelly) The plunge also marked the start of the city’s 375th anniversary festivities, a full year of events scheduled to honor the founding of the City by the Sea.
