Historic Fort Adams Homes Tour

The Military Spouses of Newport and Fort Adams Trust will offer a tour of historic homes at Fort Adams on Saturday, Dec. 14 from 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. Docents will conduct a guided tour of the Fort Adams' Officers' Quarters where families lived prior to the construction of Officers’ Row in the 1870s. Visitors will then tour four of the historic homes decorated for Christmas.

This is the first time these houses will be open to the public. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 the day of the event. Proceeds benefit the Fort Adams Trust and Military Spouses of Newport. For more information, visit milspousenewport.org or fortadams.org.

Choristers Christmas Concert

The Newport Navy Choristers will present “Christmas in Song” on Friday, Dec. 13 at 7:30 p.m. at St. Lucy’s Church. The event will benefit the Boys and Girls Clubs of Newport County. Tickets will be available at the door and cost $10 for adults and $8 for seniors and children, with a maximum of $25 per family.

Blood Drive

Navy Newport will host a Rhode Island Blood Center drive on Thursday, Dec. 19 at Naval Undersea Warfare Center, in the lower level of Building 80, from 9 a.m.-4 p.m.

Holiday Food Drive

The Chapel of Hope is running its annual Caring and Sharing program to ensure that all members of the Navy Newport community are able to enjoy traditional holiday meals. Collection boxes are at locations throughout the base, and all hands are invited to donate non-perishable items. Cash donations are also being sought, and assistance is needed to assemble baskets on Dec. 23. For more information, call the Chapel of Hope at 401-841-2234.

Thrift Shop Holiday Closing

The Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society Thrift Shop will close for the winter holidays; the last business day will be Thursday, Dec. 19. The donation bin will also close at that time. Donors will be able to resume using the bin beginning Tuesday, Dec. 31. The Thrift Shop will reopen to customers on Tuesday, Jan. 7.

ODS Graduation

Officer Development School will graduate 46 members of the medical, dental, nurse, judge advocate general, and medical service corps on Friday, Dec. 20 at 9 a.m. Maj. Gen. Juan G. Ayala, Commander, Marine Corps Installations, will address the graduates.

The ceremony will take place at the Marine Detachment at 9 a.m. For information, 401-841-1171.

Vaccines Available

Flu and shingles vaccines are available at Naval Health Clinic New England, Monday-Friday, from 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m. on a walk-in basis. FluMist nasal spray, flu vaccine injections, and Fluzone HD are available. Beneficiaries age 60 and above may also receive the shingles vaccine at the clinic.

All hands are urged to familiarize themselves with methods used to communicate operational changes on the naval station. Notifications of base status will be provided on most major local television and radio stations. Up-to-date base conditions will also be posted on Facebook.
