Decking the Wharves

Newport is a flurry of activity these days as businesses and homeowners alike try to outdo each other, and themselves, to embrace the Christmas spirit. This weekend's tree lighting at Bowen's Wharf on Saturday, Dec. 7 will see the downtown area in full splendor for the evening of family fun. Stéphen Boneu, above, assistant general manager of the Clarke Cooke House, helps with the restaurant's iconic seasonal greens. Doorways are being decorated and halls are being decked in anticipation of the annual Christmas in Newport Door Decorating Contest, with the bar having been set remarkably high in recent years in all categories. Judging will take place on Friday, Dec. 13 and final touches can be added until the day before.
