Belcourt Request Withdrawn

The owner of Belcourt Castle has withdrawn an application for a renewable energy grant that had been filed as part of a project to install a solar array on the historic manse.

Carolyn Rafaelian told the Providence Journal on Tuesday that she was unaware that the application had been filed and that she had no intention of using state tax credits as part of her ambitious restoration project.

The Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation had been scheduled to vote on the request, which had sought $18,500 from the state's Renewable Energy Fund, at a meeting on Thursday, Nov. 21.

The request was originally submitted by Newport Renewables on behalf of Rafaelian's Belcourt of Newport. But Rafaelian said that she was taken off guard by the request and asked that the matter be withdrawn from consideration.

Rafaelian, whose Alex and Ani brand is expected to top $200 million in sales this year, purchased the estate last November for $3.6 million.
