Beginning of the Survivor’s Lap at the last Relay for Life. Beginning of the Survivor’s Lap at the last Relay for Life. The committee for the American Cancer Society’s “Relay for Life of Aquidneck” will hold a planning meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 19, at 5:45 p.m. in the Middletown High School library. This meeting will kick-off the preparations for the 2014 Relay for Life which will be held overnight, May 16-17 from Friday at 4 p.m. until Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Gaudet Middle School track in Middletown.

Kerry Seibert, chair of the event, explained, “We are seeking committee members to help plan and organize this year's relay. We have open positions on a number of committees such as entertainment, food, the luminaria ceremony, the survivors' ceremonies, and others.”

Seibert has been involved with the relay for nine years and this will be her fifth year as chair. Seibert has special motivation for her participation in the fundraiser as both of her parents, two cousins, and many friends have been lost to cancer.

“My mom died from breast cancer some years ago, but today we have treatments that could have saved her. With research we can save more people in the future,” she said.

Her brother is a cancer survivor and Seibert says that this gives her hope for the future of research. “All of the funds we raise, every penny, stay in Rhode Island to be used for research and patient services. This is the same for all of the relays held in Rhode Island annually.”

Seibert went on to say, “Our teams that participate in the relay do so for many reasons. They have family members or friends that have been stricken by cancer and they want to help raise funds for research. We welcome everyone that wishes to participate.”

This meeting is open to those who wish to volunteer or for anyone wishing information on setting up a team, finding sponsors, fundraising or other activities.
