TeenGreen Program

The Norman Bird Sanctuary has announced a new TeenGreen program for students in grades 6-12. Teens can hike the trails for free, track their progress in a trail journal and turn the journal in for prizes.

Each teen who registers for this program will be given a free family membership. Teens who hike at least three trails will receive a backpack, compass and water bottle. Teens who hike 10 trails will be given the previously-mentioned items and will be entered to win $250 cash. Prizes will also be given for the best Instagram photos.

Register for TeenGreen at normanbirdsanctuary.org. Once registered, stop in at the welcome center to pick up your TeenGreen trail journal. Then, choose a trail to hike and follow directions to the plaque. To track your progress, make a pencil rubbing of each plaque along the trail. You can also share your experiences on Instagram, using #teengreennbs. In order to be eligible for prizes, all trails must be turned in by Jan. 2, 2014.

The Norman Bird Sanctuary thanks the Frederick Henry Prince Memorial Fund for its support of the TeenGreen program.

Swim Empowerment

Presenters from Swim Empowerment will discuss its project on Tuesday, Oct. 29 at 5:30 p.m. at Emmanuel Church, 42 Dearborn St. The program plans to teach 30,000 Rhode Islanders how to swim over the next 10 years. The free lessons will be open to all ages and a team of volunteers plan to reach out to black communities throughout the state. Seventy percent of black youths can’t swim. The drowning rate of blacks ages 5 to 14 is three times that of white children.

The program will be held in the church community hall and is free and open to the public. Parking is available in the church parking lot on Dearborn Street.

ALN Marina Forum

The Alliance for Livable Newport (ALN) will host a public forum on Wednesday, Oct. 30, 6 p.m. at the Newport Library. The forum will include a presentation about the proposed plan for the Goat Island Hyatt Hotel marina, followed by questions and comments from the public.

Friends Book Sale

The Friends Bookstore will hold its Annual Holiday Book Sale beginning Saturday, Nov. 2, continuing through Tuesday, Nov. 5 in the Spring Street lobby of the Newport Public Library. Hours will be Saturday, 9:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m., Sunday, 1 - 4:30 p.m., Monday, 12:30 - 8:30 p.m., and Tuesday, 9:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.

The sale will feature gently used and nearly new books including some of yesterday’s best sellers. All fiction will be priced at $1. Additional books include books on art, gardening, hobbies, sailing, and more and will be priced individually. The store has saved some of its highest quality books for this sale, presenting an opportunity for shoppers to do some holiday gift shopping.

There will be no clearance books or bag sales. Proceeds from the sale go to help update the library’s reference section and to support library programs.

The Friends Bookstore is run entirely by volunteers. Volunteers are always needed for sorting, pricing, shelving, and manning the bookstore. For more information, call 401-846-5809.

NPEF Accepting Grant Proposals

The Newport Public Education Foundation (NPEF) is currently accepting request for proposals for its community grants program.

NPEF will award one $2,500 grant and additional grants for a total disbursement of $5,000. Grants will be awarded to local agencies and/or individuals whose request will directly benefit Newport Public School students.

The grant proposals should be used to enhance educational opportunities for Newport Public School students and support the curriculum as approved by the Newport School Committee. Any proposal should be done in coordination with a Newport Public School teacher and/or principal and must have the approval of the principal of the building(s) where the students will benefit.

All applicants must submit proposals online at npef-ri.org/wrdprs/ grants/2013-2014-community-enrichment grants/.

Applications are due Nov. 13 by 3 p.m. Money will be awarded in December. For any questions/clarifications, email the Grants Committee at grants@npef-ri.org.

Volunteers Wanted

The Portsmouth 375th Anniversary Steering Committee plans to end the year long events, which began on Jan. 1, with “375” hearty souls jumping into the Sakonnet River at noon Dec. 31. This closing event will be a “pledge dive” to assist in raising funds to help inaugurate a section in the Portsmouth Free Public Library exclusively dedicated to Portsmouth’s history.

Floor Hockey and Basketball Sign-Ups

The Newport County YMCA is now accepting registration for youth sports running Nov. 16 – Dec. 21. Indoor floor hockey will be offered for ages 4-8 and preseason basketball for ages 4-10. Polish skills for the regular season with a variety of drills, fun games, and scrimmages. The YMCA is also offering a parent-and-me 3-yearold class with a different sport each week. Sports include t-ball, soccer, basketball, etc. All games will be played on Saturdays in the gymnasium at the YMCA. Retirement Reception Planned

A retirement reception for John (Jack) H. Ambrogi, Ed.D. is planned for Friday, Nov. 22 in honor of his retirement as Superintendent of Newport Public Schools.

The event will be held at the Atlantic Beach Club from 6 - 9 p.m. The evening will include hors d’oeuvres, music and dancing by the Alan Bernstein Quartet, cash bar, and a “roasting.” Tickets are $30 per person. Dog Photo Contest

In honor of Adopt A Shelter Dog month, the Potter League is holding a shelter dog photo contest. Send photos of your precious pooch (does not have to be adopted from the Potter League via email, info@potterleague.org, Facebook or in person at the shelter. Contest closes at 7 p.m. on Oct. 31. Winners will be announced in early November.

Open House

St. Michael’s Country Day School will be holding an Admission Open House on Saturday, Nov. 2. Visitors can stop in any time between the hours of 10 a.m. and noon. No appointment is necessary. Meet Head of School, Whitney Slade and Director of Admission, Sally Casey, as well as talk to faculty, staff, and parents; tour campus, visit classrooms, and receive information about financial aid. Water Main Flushing Continues

The Newport Water Division will continue overnight water main flushing until Wednesday, Oct. 30. The flushing of the water mains using fire hydrants will begin at 8 p.m. and continue until 4 a.m. Signs will be posted in each area before flushing begins. Be aware that during the flushing process, it is common to have discolored water with low water pressure. Flushing in one area may create discolored water in other areas. This is normal during this period and may be corrected by running your cold water only for 10 to 15 minutes. It is recommended that use of water be minimized during the hours of flushing. Call for Craft Artisans

The Conanicut Island Art Association is holding its holiday craft fair on Dec. 7. Local craft artisans are invited to reserve booth space. Deadline for applications is Nov. 8. The show will be at the Melrose School, Jamestown from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Crafts displayed for sale must be handmade by the artisan: no imported goods will be accepted. Newport Fire Incident Run Report

During the period from Monday, Oct. 14 through Sunday, Oct. 20 the Newport Fire Department responded to a total of 145 calls. Of those, 74 were emergency medical calls, resulting in 60 patients being transported to the hospital. Additionally, 3 patients were treated on the scene and 5 patients refused aid once EMS arrived on the scene.

Fire apparatus was used for 145 responses:

Station 1 - Headquarters/Rescue1 and 3 responded to 61 calls

Station 1 - Engine 1 and 6 responded to 48 calls

Station 2 - Old Fort Road Rescue 2 responded to 24 calls

Station 2 - Old Fort Road Engine 2 responded to 22 calls

Station 5 - Touro Street/Engine 3 and 5 responded to 34 calls

In the category of fire prevention, the department performed 10 smoke alarm / CO inspections prior to property sales, 15 life safety / site inspections, 5 fire system plan reviews, and did 43 tent inspections / plan reviews. FIRE PREVENTION MESSAGE:

Halloween is a fun holiday but it’s also an important time to practice fire safety. The occurrence of fire increases around Halloween due to arson and the use of candles as decorations. If you buy a costume, make sure the label says “Flame Resistant.” Remind children to stay away from candles and jack-o’-lanterns located on steps and porches. These candles are often displayed at a height equal to the bottom of children’s costumes and can present a hazard on crowded stairs. Be sure to provide your trick-ortreater with a flashlight or light stick so they can see where they are going and cars are more apt to see them.

George Wein Honored

Jazz impresario George Wein, founder of the Newport Jazz and Folk festivals, was one of four recipients of the New England Council’s “New Englander of the Year” awards during the Council’s annual dinner in Boston on Wednesday, Oct. 16. The Council is a non-partisan alliance of businesses, academic institutions, and public and private organizations formed to promote economic growth and a high quality of life. The award, presented yearly since 1964, honors New England residents for their commitment and contributions in their fields of work, as well as their leadership and impact on the region’s quality of life and economy.

Newport Police Log

During the period from Monday, Oct. 14 to Sunday, Oct. 20, the Newport Police Department responded to 530 calls. Of those, 105 were motor vehicle related; there were 81 motor vehicle violations issued and 24 accident reports. Five bicycle violations were issued.

Police performed 2 liquor establishment checks and responded to 3 suicide calls.

1 private tow was made.

The police also responded to 17 noise complaints, 15 animal complaints, 30 home/business alarm calls, and 7 incidents of vandalism. They also transported 3 prisoners, provided escort for 1 funeral, and performed 6 school security checks.

They recorded 3 instances of assisting other police departments and 4 other agencies.

In addition, 29 arrests were made for the following violations: n 7 arrests were made for outstanding bench warrants. n 7 arrests were made for simple assault. n3 arrests were made for public urination. n3 arrests were made for noise violations. n 1 arrest was made for larceny. n1 arrest was made for vandalism. n 1 arrest was made for disorderly conduct. n 1 arrest was made for DUI. n1 arrest was made for tampering with a vehicle. n1 arrest was made for leaving the scene of a collision. n1 arrest was made for conspiracy. n1 arrest was made for carrying a weapon while intoxicated. n1 arrest was made for possession of narcotics. n1 arrest was made for 1st degree child molestation.

Last Call this Year

The Museum of Newport Irish History Interpretive Center will close for the 2013 season on Sunday. Last call: Thursday, Oct. 24 - Sunday, Oct. 27, from noon - 5 p.m. each day. Admission is by donation. Free on-street parking is available or for free in the small lot behind the Center, accessible from Narragansett Avenue. The museum is at 648 Thames St., just south of Narragansett Avenue.

Unique Boutique Artisans Craft Fair

The Unique Boutique annual gathering of local, professional crafters will be held at Easton’s Beach Rotunda on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 9 and 10, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. The show will feature handcrafted, one- ofa kind items including children’s clothing, jewelry, pottery, hand bags, knitting, fine vintage linens, stained and art glass, woodworking, home d├ęcor, etc. Start your holiday shopping by supporting local crafters. Admission is free.

Municipal Court

Judge J. Russell Jackson presided as the Municipal Court session held on Monday, Oct. 21, at Newport City Hall. The Court adjudicates cases related to city ordinances, parking, and traffic infractions.

There were 52 matters on the docket:

-13 cases of vehicle operators wearing no seat belt

-12 cases of open containers/ drinking in public

-6 cases of minors in possession

-4 noise violation cases were heard

-3 cases of urinating in public

-3 cases of failure to obey stop signs

-2 cases of possession of an air gun

-2 cases of trash and rubbish accumulation

-1 case of failure to restrain an animal

-1 case of unlawful drinking and misrepresentation of age

-1 case of littering

-1 case of off-premises advertising

-1 case of operating a guest house without the special use permit approval of the Zoning Board of Review at 11 Calvert St. was heard. Additionally, there was failure to register a rental dwelling and posting of notice by the owner. The defendant pleaded no contest and was fined $5,000 for the three charges. There was a payment of $200 with $4,800 suspended for one year.

-1 case on changes, repairs and/or modification of a structure without a certificate of appropriateness at 14 Filmore St. was continued. There was also a prohibited use of having more than one unregistered and/or inoperable vehicle on the property.

-1 case of making changes to exterior features of a structure within the historic district without a certificate of appropriateness and proper building permits at 21 John St. was continued.

All Aboard the Polar Express

The Newport Dinner Train has been selected for the eighth consecutive year by Warner Brothers Entertainment, Inc. to partner through Rail Events to bring the officially licensed train ride event, The Polar ExpressTM to Newport this holiday season. The train schedule will include two excursions on Friday, Saturday and Sunday from Nov. 16 – Dec. 21. All guests enjoy first class seating. Free Shred-It Event

A SHRED-IT truck will be on site at the Heatherwood Nursing & Rehabilitation Center on Saturday, Oct. 26 from 9 a.m. – noon to securely destroy any documents and personal papers. Tours of the facility will also be offered. Heatherwood is at 398 Bellevue Ave.

Farmer’s Market Farewell

Wednesday, Oct. 30 will be the last day of the Aquidneck Growers’ Market summer season and the farmers will celebrate the last day of the season with a tribute to the Halloween season by selling in costumes. Visit and cast your vote from 2 - 6 p.m. for the “finest foolery” on display.

The market re-opens indoors at St. Mary’s Old Parish Hall, 324 East Main, Portsmouth, on Saturday, Nov. 9, running through May 2014 from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m.

Parents Night Out

The Newport YMCA is offering its next Parents Night Out on Saturday, Oct. 26 from 4:30 - 8:30 p.m. The night includes a pizza dinner, swimming and kids gym. The fee to attend ranges from $15 - $25 per child. Registration must be done at the YMCA office. The night is offered the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of every month, with the next one on Nov. 9. Run or walk the Sakonnet Greenway Trail on Saturday, Nov. 2 to help support the Aquidneck Land Trust. Registration is from 9 - 10:15 a.m. at the Glen, near the polo fields. The race starts at 10:30 a.m. for runners and 10:45 a.m. for walkers. Strollers and leashed dogs welcome to join walkers. Vatican Analyst Talk on Pope Francis

John Allen, senior correspondent for the National Catholic Reporter and senior Vatican analyst for CNN, will discuss “Behind the Headlines: Pope Francis and His New Vision for the Catholic Church” when he presents a lecture on Tuesday, Oct. 29 at 7 p.m. on the campus of Salve Regina University.

Allen is the author of seven bestselling books on the Vatican and Catholic affairs, and writes frequently on the Church for major national and international publications. His most recent book is “People of Hope,“ an extended interview with Archbishop Timothy Dolan of New York. He’s also a popular speaker on Catholic affairs, both in the United States and abroad.

Free and open to the public. Allen’s lecture will be presented in Bazarsky Lecture Hall, located in O’Hare Academic Center on Ochre Point Avenue.

Edward King House Cocktail Party

The Edward King House will hold its Annual Cocktail Party on Saturday Oct. 26 from 5:30 – 8 p.m. The fundraising event will feature hors d’oeuvres from Newport’s finest restaurants, cocktails, music by Hugo D’Ascentis and gift certificate raffles. Proceeds from the event will benefit programming for seniors age 50 and above. Tickets are $30 and available at the King House in advance only.
